Suggestions on a Highwall

I am going to have some spare funds I could spend on this rifle. It is possible that this rifle may have been a Schuetzen at some point but there is no serial number so I cannot paper it. Currently it is a .219 Donaldson-Wasp and shoots consistent 3/4 inch groups at a 100 yards so I do not want to rebarrel. What I think I would like to do is have the receiver and lever color case hardened, wood refinished and a reblue. What you all think? Other suggestions? Suggestions on who to do the work? I would be able to spend up to about $2,000 or so if needed.

John,

Your rifle looks pretty nice just the way it is and 219 Donaldson is a very good caliber. Is there any name on the barrel? The triggers may be original Winchesters, but I don’t think the lever is. If it was mine, I’d just leave it alone and shoot it.

There are no marking anywhere that I can find, either on the barrel or any other parts of the rifle.

John:

I would suggest you do just exactly what you want with it. There appears to be very little on the rifle that is original, so you are not damaging any collectors value.  If you want to gussy it up, by all means go for it. It will look good color cased.

The most beautiful rifle I have is the one that shoots the best, no matter what it looks like.

My personal preference would be to make it what I wanted, and that would be a Schuetzen along the lines of original Win. style. That buttstock looks like it may be an original that's been reworked. Is the grip cap a Win marked cap?
I'd case the frame and levr and rebarrel to .32-40 or .38-55 with a half octagon barrel. Might recoup some of your money selling the barrel and wood that's on it now here in the For Sale section.
But if you want to keep the .219 caliber, then I'd just leave it as is and not change anything.

Thanks for the comments. If I decide to do something with it could anyone give me some recommendations for the Color case hardening? Turnbull does great work but is really high dollar.

John,

If that is a coil spring action as the lever (which looks like a Laudensack) is somewhat original, then the action was originally blued, not case colored.  If you still want to go with case coloring, you might check with the outfit in Wyoming that does restorations, etc at or near the old Ballard facility.  Keith Kilbey out there does really nice work.

You have a very nice rifle.  However, may I make a suggestion for your consideration ?

Although you mention a discretionary fund that you will most likely tap into, here is an alternative.  Bypass the discretionary fund and sell the Hi-Wall.  You should not want for willing and able prospective purchasers.

With the funds that you realize from the sale of the Hi-Wall, place an order with CPA Rifles in Dingman's Ferry, Pennsylvania for their CPA/Stevens M-44 1/2 rifle.  You will be offered an assortment of stock configurations, barrel selections, action finishes, etc, etc.

In essence, you can have a superior action built into a custom rifle that will meet you every shooting need.

Please give my suggestion your utmost consideration.

Im curious
Why is the stevens superior to the highwall? I think anything that says Winchester on it is better than any stevens.

     Hello Tom ;

With all due respect, I did not state, nor did I imply, that the J. Stevens Model 44 1/2 action, as currently reproduced by the CPA/Shuttleworth Rifle Co., is superior to the Winchester manufactured action or to any other action, for that matter.

My above proposal was merely an attempt to give the gentleman an additional option for his consideration, that perhaps he had not already considered.  I am not one to engage in the childish game play of "my rifle is better than your rifle, nan-a-nan-a, .   .   .   ."

Nor will I give an account of the attributes of one action/rifle over  another, as in my opinion, it is incumbent upon each of us to make those assessments and to determine what factors are important to us as individuals.

The word "superior" does not necessarily translate into the singular.  Superior can be used to denote more than one.  It is a descriptive adjective which may be used to describe a Stevens action just as well as a Winchester action, and many others actions to numerous to mention.
