Of the available dbl set trigger assemblies, which is best suited to
the trapdoor?

thanks

Whatever you choose, you'll have to install a fly in the tumbler.  What style of rifle are you building?  Are you trying to drop one in a military stock? (don't know if I've seen any like that)  It might be easier to have someone make up a single set trigger on your triggerplate and re-inlet.

Thanks, much food for thought. I believe I saw an ad for a TD replacement tumbler with fly. Might have been in Single Shot News.

In the "US Springfield Trapdoor information center" there are pictures of an intricate single set trigger. But as John said, you will still need a tumbler with fly. Can't tell you how many end mills I've destroyed trying to cut original tumblers even after repeated annealings .   If'n you can find the modified tumbler, post it here for us. I don't use many original locks in the custom rifles I build, but do have a couple. Good luck partner. Smiley

Dick,

In future try using a solid carbide milling tool and run it at as high a speed as you can. They'll cut most stuff including tool steel. They cost a bomb, compared to HSS, but you may try 'Fleabay' I've had some very good cutters at reasonable rates on that site.

I erred re: tumbler. The ad I mentioned was recalled and the
offer was for a hardened tumpler w/ trigger pull adjustement
capability. seller is Robert Smith of Powell, WY.

Pedrosoli offers a tumbler and fly as separate items. No idea if would
or suitable formodification.

If your local library has a copy of a book about Custer, I believe has
a picture of the General holding a custom trapdoor. Cast nose cap,
I don't recall the sights, dbl set triggers and squarish triggerguard
usually associated with a couple of Philadelphia makers.

Hi Dick !!!

While not a double set, I have an SST sketch that I received back on 7-12-01 from Art Todd. and while I never used this design, I passed it on to many others who tell me they had good success.

Art also informed me that he never had a sketch of the tumbler and fly but its easy to figure out from the trigger mechanism.. Also, this type may be found in Al Fresca’s (Trapdoor Collector) books.. PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you a copy...

Good Luck !!

Ed...

Just a comment: A fly for a two notch tumbler is not too hard to do.  A fly for a three notch tumbler is considerably tougher to make work. After making a three notch fly, I find I seldom use the bottom notch.

I agree with Chuck on the two vs three notch tumbler. I did three "once" and always, when I could get them cut at all, used two notch tumblers. Saves time, energy and cussin'.  Roll Eyes

Custer's trapdoor sporter was built on the  (weaker) Springfield Model 1866 action, and was in .50-70.  It's the one he carried on the hunt with the Grand Duke Alexis from Russia, and it's pictured with the Duke in several photos.  Later he got the Remington Rolling Block in .50-70 that was his favorite hunting rifle, and appears in later pictures.
(The rolling block was misplaced during a little scrap with the Sioux in June 1876 and hasn't turned up since... Roll Eyes )

I put an aftermarket tumbler (could have been Smith, not sure) in my trapdoor. Dropped in but uses the  safety notch if I remember aright. less hammer fall.

Buffler,
With the reduced throw tumbler, Do you have the bring the hammer to full cock to open the breech block? Think that would be similar to the operation of a rolling block.

To answer Dick's original question: Most any of the muzzle loading DST's should work. Some of the cheaper foriegn made ones are not good. I normally use the Hawken style.

Has anyone here tried the rifle shoppe fly? I've never tried one but am thinking it would work well for my very similiar project.
