Last 44 1/2?????

I just aquired a new sheep in the fold. It was posted on the local Cabelas site along with a Rem. Hepburn I wanted to see. First they fetched the Remington, and I was all ready to lay down my money for it. Nice standard sporter in 40-45 heavy barrel, shiney bore, with good wood. Then the salesperson walked out the door with the 44 1/2, I wasn't expecting much, they are usually all beat up and not worth the price Cabelas asks. This one was different by a long shot. Darn near 99% all around, with a Lyman convertible front and Marbles rear in 32-20. Nicest pure 44 1/2 I have ever seen. The manager said they thought it might have been redone. Not a chance. The blue was barely worn from the block, couldn't have had more than a box or two shot through it. I happily paid the asking price and walked out. The SN is 12876, must be one of the last 50 or so off the line.

Sometimes a pig can find a diamond.... or however the saying goes.

Beautiful 44 1/2. Sometimes you get lucky. I keep trying to get that lucky. Sort of did when I picked up my Stevens Bisley Model. It is not nearly that nice but is rare so I am happy with it. Would sure like to find a 44 1/2 that nice.

Thanks for the offers fellas. But it isn't alone. There are three other Stevens and a couple of high-walls to keep it company.

I really kinda lucked into it. I think a plain 44 1/2 is harder to find in this condition than a high model like the 49's and up. Just because these were the everyday go-to meat getters that were beat around and never cleaned. I have seen tables full of schuetzen style rifles in 90% condition at the Baltimore Show, but I can't ever remember seeing but a few plain Ballards and Stevens in this condition. High-Walls are not quite as rare in this condition, but still difficult to run across.
