Question on Schutzen rifle

First of all, is it schuetzen or schutzen? 2nd, I have a chance to acquire an original schuetzen rifle, in a 25 cal. Has the nickel buttplate, cheek piece, Loudensack stock, fine line checkering, knock out wood, all the usual goodies. Here's the question. The barrel has been shortened one inch. I have no idea why, and I think the gun was bored out to a different caliber as well. The rifling in the gun is superb, but I don't think original. How much does that hurt the gun? It's a blued frame, high wall. The frame was rust blued years ago also. Just curious if someone could PM me and give some idea on what this thing really might be worth. Thanks for any help, Jake

Jake, either spelling is correct, though American users mostly use "Schuetzen".

Can't really help you on the value of your rifle, but I'm curious...is it marked as a .25 cal., and has been opened up larger, or was it something smaller and is now a .25 caliber?  (Like re-boring a .22 WCF to .25 and chambering it for 25-20 SS.)  Photos would be nice... Wink

The accepted spelling in America is Schuetzen this reflects the pronunciation of the word. The German spelling is Schutzen but this spelling requires an umlaut over the U. Hope that this helps and I hope that the earth doesn’t fall off its axis when I start to give spelling tips.

Just wondering if I should rebarrel this gun with a lined .22 LR barrel? I have a very good # 3 and # 1 barrel, both relined with match liners that I could put on this gun. Would it make it worth more? Just curious as it is going to get sold once it's fixed. Jake

I wouldn't mind getting a look at it, if you are selling it. Naturally, I would be more interested in it with the .25 barrel.

My goodness, birds flew North for the Winter, rivers ran upstream, and Democrats are talking about more gun freedoms.  Quick, 40Rod, spell something wrong before the very Fabric of the Universe begins to dissolve!   Grin Grin Grin Grin  rotflmao!

Froggie

PS  My screen showed your umlaut fine, MB!  Wink

When I do searches for German rifles it does make a difference how I shpell Shutzen, Schuetzen Schutzen. Any other time I spell it Schutzen just to be contrary which is in my nature.
Sometimes when I eat dinner in a Chinese restaurant I speak with a oriental accent and bow a lot. Well, I used to do that till I found out they dont appreciate it much. It's better to just speak American in them places.
