CPA/Stevens Extractor

What is the purpose of the small allen head set screw that is part of the CPA extractor ?  I do not see that it protrudes out of the surface of the extractor and it is not mentioned in the CPA Owners Manual for adjustment purposes.

Does anyone know it's purpose and / or how to adjust it ?

Creedmore do you mean the plunger thats in the action, spring loaded and presses against the breech block ?  If so Mine will jump out at times when switching breech blocks, Could be newer actions have a set screw to keep it captured.

On the extractor itself I don't see any allen screws except for the pin that goes though the extractor and frame rails, one the extractor pivots on. It has a set screw on the bottom of the action to capture it, Keeps it from working out, If it was set up tight with a fitted pin the action would not take down easy,  Thats why it has the set screw instead.  Some of those pins are captured by slotted screws others Paul used Allens.

CMM's extractor has a small (4-40ish) set screw through it front to back, point to the front, that is just above the pivot boss. It does not show any bearing on anything that we could see. I never saw one set up like that either.

Why not ask the Shuttleworths? I have an extractor that I got from them for a Stevens 44 1/2 - no set screw.

Asking them would be the right/best thing to do. Did you buy the rifle new from them?

I have 6 CPA's here at the house, 2 of them have different extractors for 38/55 and 405 Win cases, not a one has a set screw in the extractor.

Hey Mr. Boats, glad you had a good time last week-end, even if you missed another good time at Gretna.  SingleShot (Willis) was there and he worked a little on my extractor, so what he describes above in his post is an accurate description of it.

I just assumed that all CPA extractors everywhere had the Allen head set screw, but it seems to serve no obvious purpose.

Mr. DRC ...   Yes, the rifle is new and purchased directly from the CPA/Stevens folks who I know and think most highly of.  I respect their time and generally don't call or visit with them unless I have a significant issue.  The set screw in the extractor is doing nothing as far as I can determine, but was wondering what's up there.

May be that Paul had some free time on his hands one afternoon (yea right) and decided to drill and tap Creedmoor's extractor just for the heck of it.

Is there anyone else out there in schuetzen land who has this arrangement in their extractor ?

Thanks guys,

I have a 25-20 WCF extractor I recently bought from CPA with the set screw. The extractors that came with my CPA in 32-40 and 22 rimfire don't have it. I don't know what purpose it might serve. But I am curious.

Me too, Think it will make my CPA run faster ? if so give me three.

Could it be something to adjust the way the cartridge headspaces ?

If the "point to the front" can protrude through the short flat between the outer radius of the pivot pin boss and the long flat that rises vertically when the extractor is in battery position (non-ejecting type), the screw may be used to adjust extraction timing:
e.g. initiation of case extraction when the lever is rotated forward and the lever begins to bump the extractor rearward.

This would be a hell of a lot easier way to set up an extractor installation, either new or replacement, than file - check, file - check, file - check - harden. If the angles between the lever and extractor are already in proper alignment, the screw adjustment may be moot.

Just my two cents, and if I've misread where the posts indicate the screw is located, this post is BS  Grin

My Extractor on my CPA .33-47 has the set screw. I think someone told me it could be adjusted to change the amount the case is extracted from the chamber.

Terry is on the right track the set screw limits the reward motion of the extractor to keep the rim on some cases such as those based on the 357 Max. from sliding past the extractor when inserting the case.

Received my CPA May 2015 in 32-40 Bench Model . On page 10 fourth paragraph down from the top in my CPA owners manual that came with the rifle under heading Breechblock/Extractor Adjustments , " The Breechblock must drop enough for the case clearance when loading and unloading , but if it drops too much the plunger mentioned above can come over the top and cause the block to get hung up ." If you need to adjust this there is a set screw in the EXTRACTOR , which acts as a stop , limiting lever travel and breechblock movement ." My CPA 32-40 does not have this set screw . Thanks

Yep, I have 2 that don't.
Call CPA and ask for a new one and send them back the one sans set screw
