Anyone know where I can find information and pictures on the sporter trapdoors made by Carlos Grove from Denver Colorado?

Thanks, Norm

These are supposed to Gove style.  After drooling over the Ballard scroll and look at the Trapdoors.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing it. The trapdoor fits into the English style very well. How about an English sporting flintlock trapdoor? Undecided Huh

Told ya I was crazy.

Great thread!
DoubleD, Thanks for the information on Carlos Gove ( left out the "r" this time!).

I will now have to dig out my Trapdoor sporter project and try to get it finished.  I am looking for someone that cuts a stock with a pistol grip for a trapdoor if there is anyone doing this.

Norm, Treebone Carving used to make a pistol grip sporter stock for a trapdoor. Ya might try their website. Good luck.

years ago when i shot sil.  there was a guy that shot a custom trapdoor in 40/65.  built by a local gunsmith  it shot 26 to 30 scores all the time.  with a good barrel and 1 piece stock  they should shoot very well.  art

Just purchased a Hawken style stock from Treebone for a build in 40-50 BN. Hope it turns out as good as yours...

I love Chuckster's rifle as well. Was the stock hand carved, or based off one from Treebone, or?

I'd also like to find some info on the sporters made by Whitney. Saw 5 of them many years ago and thought they were awesome. But it's been so long, and I haven't found any pictures since, and it's entirely possible I'd now rather have something different.

The 'Whitneys' I saw were trapdoors. The guy said they made 50 of them, 40-65 and 45-70. He had 5 hanging on his wall. I've never found anything about them.

Just did another search, and found several at, or were at, auction. I don't remember the ones I saw having original style buttplates, or a schnabel forearm, but it's likely to be 20+ years ago now.

Bottom line, I like Chuckster's far more.

wesg, Appreciate the kind words.
The stock was hand carved from a blank.
Thanks,  Chuck

All the more impressive. I was really hoping this was some tweaking on a rough profiled stock.

I don't think I have the patience for that. I think maybe my skills would improve to 'good enough' as I went along, but the artistry wouldn't be there.

I like the forearm and receiver area of the Treebone Hawken (although I like the points behind the lock on yours more), but there's too much drop in the comb for my taste. Might be worth talking to him about carving one with that front half, and the English butt up to the back of the pistol grip. I think I could handle blending those together.
