I know there a couple of you who know this model better than I do. Were the barrels marked Walnut Hill on the barrel? My 417 1/2 is but I do not own a 418 yet to compare.

No.  At least none of my 418 and 418 1/2 rifles are marked that way.

My 3 digit mod. 418 does not say Walnut Hill and my 3 digit mod. 417 is missing that stamping also.  My #3xxx serial number mod.417 has Walnut Hill in a very strong stamping.  Hope this helps.  Richard

Exactly the info I need. I am bidding on the one on Auction Arms and wanted to make sure the barrel had not been swaped out before I got in over my head. It has the correct sights as near as I can tell and looks good. I feel comfortable going a lot further than I am now. Got outbid today and have to figure out how far to go on this one. Any ideas on max price?

Ballards may be weaker,

I've been watching that one too, as I know two of the other bidders. Hope one of you ends up with it! Looks like a righteous gun to me. I'm abstaining from the "what I think it's worth" as I don't want to get one of them mad at me.

Marlinguy,
I appreciate your restraint. Got a number in my head that is probably more than it is worth but I have learned that if you pay a little too much for something that is of good quality today, tomorrow you will be ok with it. Time will make it worth more than you paid for it. We will see how it comes out. I have a couple of realy nice guns in my collection that I know I paid too much for at the time. I have never regretted spending the money on any of them. If I don't spend it, my kids will.

Got outbid on this one in the last minute of the auction by $5. Anyone here the lucky bidder? No hard feelings if so. Public auction and I hope an enthusiast got it. I probably should have gone a couple of hundred higher but we all have monitay limits.
