Tasco external adjustment scope
Jun 5th, 2008 at 9:09am
Print Post
Recently, I picked up a Tasco scope with external adjustment. 12 times magnification and 40mmm object lens.
Anybody know anything about these? Like when they were made, etc.
It looks like a copy of an Unertl with similar mounts and a back to battery spring.
Thanks.
Fred.

Fred,
I have one, a model 705. Mine is a 6-18 power. Mine looks very much like the Bausch & Loam scope except the Bausch and Loam used a worm gear ring for adjustment, very unique indeed.
I have not yet mounted my scope. In Old RifleScopes there is an old catalog cut sheet on the bottom of one of the Tasco pages. If memory serves me, it says it uses the same block spacing as the Unertl. 7.2" I think it is. I think the catalog cut was early '70's but would need to check to be sure.
I see them go on ebay now and then usually from 250.00-500.00. I think I paid a bit much, though not the 500.00, but still can't wait to use it.
They sure are big suckers!
Mine did not come with blocks, I think it is the POSA blocks that are needed, I picked some up at a gun show used.

Fred,
Just found the book, it says 7" spacing on the blocks and the catalog was from 1971.

I have a couple of them, a 20x and a 6-18x.  Big, heavy, very clear optics.   Probably the best Tasco scopes made up through the 1980's.  The only thing that I don't care for on them is that the rings are relatively soft aluminum, not up to Unertl quality.  Also, can't find anyone willing/able to put a  dot in the crosshairs.  I believe that they were made ca. mid 1960's.

Thanks for the quick replies: the mounts are thick, clumsy looking aluminium as described. All I need now is a very big rifle to put it on!

Is Lee still in business, and have you tried them? Of course if you're brave, you can install your own - maybe. Crosshairs are easy to access & I've replaced a few but my big fat fingers don't wanna work well any more. However it appears that a dab of some sort of hardening agent applied to the intersection of the hairs would form a dot, albeit perhaps a somewhat ragged one.
Good luck, Joe

Thanks, Joe.  I did check with Lee, and he doesn't work on the Tasco line at all.   Embarrassed  I'm not brave enough (Foolish enough?  The scopes work, don't mess with them!) to disassemble one of these scopes by myself, and nobody in the local area does optical work.

David,
Did you try Parsons Scope Service.  If he can't do it, he can probably refer you to someone who can.  Parsons is not quick but his work is absolutely the very best!

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

The Tasco is a copy of the Bausch & Lomb Balvar.

Hey, Leon, I've had Gil do work for me in the past.  You're right about both aspects, time and quality!  I checked with him shortly after getting my first Tasco, and he wasn't doing dot work at that time, nor could he direct me to anyone who would work on the Tascos.  I've just had to get used to the medium crosshairs in 'em.  There have been light conditions where I could see them better than fine crosshairs with a 1/8" dot!   Smiley

I have a 24x with fine crosshairs. The mounts do not want to stay secure on anything heavier recoil than a 22! BUT- the optics are ALMOST as good as my 24x Unertls!

Fred. contact John Knusen:  knudsen at earthlink dot net He does good work and he is fast. I've had him clean repair or re-crosshair several scopes.
