Stevens Scope question

Print Post
I picked up a Ballard that had a Stevens scope on it.

I have not been able to find much info on it.  I posted a request on the Yahoo Schuezen group and all I got was 'I want it, how much?"

It is marked:

J Stevens Arms & Tool Co
Pat. PNDG                             NO 368
          Chicopee Falls. Mass USA

The bases say Pat NOV. 5 1907

it is just over 16" long and had non-clicking adjustments
similar to my TargetSpot. 6 power maybe a bit more.

It has a large center post instead of cross hairs.
There are two small optical flaws at the bottom edges. Probably
chips in the internal elements. Distracting but not affecting sight
picture.

Here is a picture:

Good evening:

I would love to say your scope is worthless, and I will take it off ypor hands for only $25!

I checked my copy of Stroebel's book on scopes (Copyright 2000), and he says it is a 6X, and worth $300-$500.  Then.

My offer is still open, as it would look right nice on my Stevens Model 44 ( Cal. 44-40), which now sports a Lyman 438 scope.

If the scope needs cleaning, I have a great contact.

EdBu sounds about right. I would think $500 to $600 would be close today. There is a company that does cleaning and repairs on old scopes.  Try to google scope repairs.
Queston for EdBu. How is the 44 working out in .44-40? It is my understanding that the 44 action is on the weak side for something like the .44-40. I am looking for a 44 1/2 in .44-40 but am wondering how the 44 action would hold up. I have the Lyman 438 on 2 of my 44's. Stevens did offer the 438 as an option in their catalogs back in the day.

Thanks for the replies.  Makes me feel better about what I paid for the rifle.
For now I am going to see what works best for now.  May look at selling the scope later to fund new toys. Just getting in to Schuetzen.  I have been shooting the Black Powder matches at the local Schuetzen fest.  The guys just love hearing (and smelling) a 45-90 on the bench next to them Wink

Hard to tell from the photo but the mounts appear to be Winchester and not Stevens. Might have someone who has a Winchester scope check the patent date.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I would agree with Dave. Those don't appear to be Stevens mounts, but rather Winchester type 1. The scope appears to be a later Stevens.-Vall

bpjack,
The Winchester mounts were a common change for early shooters, as they were click adj., while the original Stevens were not. In my opinion, this is a acceptable upgrade, but some picky collectors might think otherwise.

The Winchester mounts are not click adjustment, or at least the ones that I have owned were not.  IMO a Stevens scope with Winchester mounts would drop the value by a lot.   The mounts appear to be on backwards.

They made 'em both ways at different times, I believe; clicks were the later ones, or at least that's what I was told. FWIW the 2 Win scopes I've owned both had clicks.
