Swiss buttplates

I'm looking for a source for smaller Swiss-type buttplates.  Stock dimension is 4" from top of butt at comb to toe.  Any help would be appreciated.

Waterman,

At one time CPA was supplying a raw casting of the so-called "small Swiss" butt plate, one that could be interchanged directly with the standard crescent type found on many high- and low-wall Winchesters.  You may also be able to get a finished plate of that type from Ballard Rifle Co, at a higher price, but ready to install.  There are also a variety of plates available from Track of the Wolf.  Maybe one of those is adaptable to the application you have in mind.  All of these companies are mentioned frequently on this forum and have websites you may wish to visit.

Waterman,
CPA and Ballard may be your best bets for buttplates. I bought 2 from Track of the Wolf, and the Helm style I put on my hiwall took some finish and fit work, but turned out nice. The small swiss I bought from them, well, I'm still working on that. There is ALOT of material to file and grind. It is truly a rough casting. But, if you have limited money and plenty of time and patience, go for it.

I used one of the 'small interchangeable Swiss' wall buttplates from CPA, the undrilled casting. Fairly smooth finish, took about 45 min to fit it to an original stock, no big-time steel removal required. Fit wasn't perfect but was very acceptable considering these wall stocks and buttplates in the beginning were all individually shaped and smoothed together, and usually the originals don't interchange perfectly either.
HTH, good luck, Joe

Hello fellows,

Does anyone know if there is someone making them (casting) using the correct bronze alloy? I have seen the steel repros, but none made of bronze (gunmetal).

Frontier Armory has some of the small Swiss variety.  I've been looking for a large Swiss made in brass, but this ia as close as I've come so far.

Phil,

You might find what you need in a brass large Swiss from Track of the Wolf.  They show a brass Helm style, for instance.  Smiley

Bert,

The closest I have seen to what you are looking for was the old stock from CPA.  They had sand cast white bronze or brass plates in small Swiss as well as both Helm and Laudensack styles.  Being sand cast rather than wax, they were a bit rougher to clean up and prepare for finishing or installation.  I don't know whether any of those are still available, though.  Undecided

I am in the process of borrowing a Win large swiss buttplate which I intend to have duplicated in brass to later have nickle plated.  If any of you fellows have a need for one, I can have one made for you at the same time.  You will need to let me know.  They will be sand cast and I can get either brass or white bronze (polishes up nice and looks very similar to nickle).  I'm told that the shrinkage from the original will be around 3%.  There are plenty of steel ones out there for sale already.

Let me know if you have an interest.  When I get a rough idea of how many of you are interested, I can get a price.  They will only cost what the foundry charges plus shipping.  I'm not intending on making anything out of the deal except for the fact that the more I have done, the less each will cost.
Thanks
Phil

You CAN nickle plate steel you know.  Does the expense of chasing down a brass plate balance against knowing that it really is brass or bronze under that plating?  Your call, but I went the easy way and nickled a steel plate.  Done correctly, it really is indistinguishable.

Until the nickle wears through and no brass shows.

Seriously however, I've thought about that at great length and after my post, my thoughts were turning to one in white bronze.  I've done that before and when I polished it out, it looked very much like nickle.  That route might make more sense.

You could polish out steel too for that matter, but when the nickel wears through, the next color will be copper.  There is copper plating between the nickel and the steel.  In any event, it won't wear through in this lifetime.

I wasn't aware of that.  So you are saying that the steel plate if first plated with copper, then nickle?  Better adhesion I guess?

Yes, that is what I was told.  I haven't tried scratching it off to verify.

The folks that did this were recommended by Ken Hurst.  They also do "metalife" plating or something like that.  It looks sort of like nickel, but I asked for black nickel - as would be traditional.

Yes it is correct that they plate it with copper first and then the nickel to get a god adhesion, some skip the copper plating and the costemer will soon find out, the Metalife plating looks very similar to stainless steel and is a wery strong plating that will last a lifetime.

If you have a case colored action and plate it you can always de-plate it again and the original case color will be intact.

If your nickel plating shoud ware off in 30-50 years you could just have it platet again  Wink
