Who has anything chambered in .50-140?

I live near Des Moines, Iowa. I would like to fire  few rounds of .50-140.
From what I have read, some folks hate it, some love it. So before I shell out the big $$, I'd like to shoot a few rounds. Shocked

I have a .50-70, so I have something to compare.

Thanks,

Hello Schooler,

I own and occasionally shoot a '74 Shiloh Sharps in 50-140.  It is a relatively brutal gun to shoot but no more uncomfortable that a 458 Win Mag.  It probably recoils twice as much as your 50-70 and you get half as many reloads out of a can of powder.  I have considered rebarreling to 45-70, or some other useful cartridge, but I got it from my buddy's Dad's estate and I can't bring myself to alter it.  Since so many of them have been rebarreled it is kind of unique to have one of these rifles in it's original configuration.  Of course the other drawback is you have to build your own cartridges.  I calculated my first cartridges, after considering the cost of dies, brass (big expense), bullets, powder, primers, et al, cost me about $10.00 each.  Of course those costs go down the more you shoot, if you can stand to shoot it more Wink  I have a little 7 MB video showing the gun in full recoil.  If you would like me to forward it to you send me your email address.  I hope this didn't discourage you.  There are a few 50-140 shooters on the Shiloh web page that talk about actually campaigning them...bringing to mind the adage..."when guns were made of steel and men were too"  THOP

Sure, send it my way, it should be interesting.

Where are you from? Since I farm, I can't get away like some folks can.
If you're anywhere near me, maybe a road trip is in order.

How much does your rifle weigh?

I have a leftover box of 20 brand-new virgin 50-140 Garrett brass, came in a Bell box so I assume it's really Bell brass with the Garrett headstamp. It's a LOT better quality than my 50-110 Bertram crap, FWIW! I don't have a 50-140 or even a 50-110 any longer, so..
Good luck, Joe

Skoullar,

Surprised you can even get in the fields what with all the wet weather we're having around here. I live up in M'town and do most of my shooting at Steamboat Rock.

Can't help you much other than to say I've got a .50/90 that I've loaded up to 110 grs. No accuracy at all at that powder charge. The most accurate load tho was 93 grs.. I used that for a coupla years up at Ackley at the NCOWS Nats.

As for the "Brutality" of the Big 50's I think it's over-rated. One of my favorite stories happened at the NCOWS Nats. A young fellow about 12 yrs. old wanted to shoot my .50 after I'd shot my Buffalo Course. I don't think he weighed more than 130 pds. soaking wet. His actual name is Jesse James. I showed him how to hold the gun. The first shot he missed because I think he was afraid that he'd be "killed" with the recoil. After that he fired 10 rds. and hit a Buffalo every shot. Turned around and asked if I had any more shells.  Smiley The funny part was about every 3 shots he had to hunch his little butt forward to get back on the sticks properly.  Smiley

To me the .50 has more of a shove than a kick and if you know how to hold it right you can shoot all day without bruising yourself. Of course if you hold it wrong you could break your collar bone to. I've shot 75 rds. in competition in one day with no problems. 25 of them in 6 1/2 minutes one year, and 5 min. 45 sec. in another! Of course I didn't have any trouble sleeping that nite either!  Smiley
