Stevens Barrel Marking

Hi All:

I have a question about some markings on a Stevens 44 barrel. A stamped mark "x inside a box" appears on both ends of the normal barrel stamping. This is an original #2 relined barrel that matches the receiver SN. Is this a Stevens factory mark??? Any info is appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't know what it means, but I've got one that looks exactly like it; screw holes & all!

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I've got a couple also, but never really saw it as an "X" until now! I always thought of it as four triangles with points together.
These sort of markings are usually added to a rollstamp to help the stamp "grab" the barrel and pull it along so the lettering is clear. Most makers had some sort of ornamental design at each end of their rollstamp and it meant nothing, but served a purpose.

Thanks Marlinguy. Makes perfect sence. I'm a newer convert to the old arts. These old guns sure show a character and life that a shiny new bolt gun with a composite stock will never be able to. I'm gut hooked.
