Gents;

I have a 44 in need of extractor repair and/or replacement. I have not had one of these apart and am lacking disassembly instructions so wondered if someone could clue me in to what is required to remove the extractor from this critter?

Don, depending on when your action was made, there are two large screws or pins towards the front of the action, the block swings on one, and the lever on the other.

Take a look at both sides of these...if both ends appear to be slotted screw heads, you have the more common version of the 44, with pins.  The screw heads on the RIGHT side of the action are actually retainers for these pins...remove these and drift the pins out with a small punch.  Then the block, lever, extractor will all come out the bottom of the action.  Don't try to turn the pins from the LEFT side, they are keyed in their position and all you'll do is wreck the screw slots.

In the older versions of the action, the lever and block are held in place by two large screws, easily identified as having slotted heads on only the LEFT side, and threading directly into the RIGHT sidewall of the action...just turn these out normally and the block assembly comes out just like the late actions.

Hope this isn't too confusing.  There are brief disassembly instructions and a cut-away diagram of the action in Frank DeHaas' "Single Shot Rifles and Actions", which is a library MUST HAVE.
