Finally progress on Ballard!

I finally took a couple of hours this weekend and made some progress on my ballard.  Three pieces of pine, a bunch of bondo and a lot of rasping and it's ready to send to Dave Crossno to duplicate.  Hopefully, the following picture will insert:

Dave,

Looks like it's starting to shape up!  What caliber?

Hey, finally remembered out how to insert the picture right!

Greg,

It's intended for a .22 lr, I started out working on a stevens 44, wavered for a while, and finally decided to build a ballard based on an original straight grip #3.  The stock design is more or less my invention:  I took a swiss buttplate from Shuttleworth, aligned it parallel with the action at the length of pull and cast off I wanted.  Made a cheek piece shaped to match the dimensions on one I like on a custom mauser I made, (with some extra meat on top to look good) and moved it around until it aligned my eye with the intended vernier tang sight naturally.  Then I built bondo and pine scrap to fill in the pieces between.  It is all glued to a splintered original ballard stock.  I'm pleased it came out looking like anyting at all, I'm into it about 4 to 5 hours total.

Looking GOOOD!  Grin

I'd say you've achieved a sort of classic Continental look to it (apropos of the Mauser stock that inspired your cheekpiece.)  It looks like it will be just as pleasant and controllable to shoot as the best of the German and Swiss schuetzen rifles.  Please let us see the finished product with the "real" wood when it is done.  Maybe it will inspire me to get off my @$$ and do something with MY Ballard .22 project.  Roll Eyes

Regards,
Froggie

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Nice hybrid stock Dave! Looks very functional, and as Froggie mantioned, a bit of a cross between an Aydt and a Ballard style stock.

Appreciate the kind words.  It went in the mail yesterday, so I should have it back in walnut in three or four weeks.

Lets see:  Got the action, got the Lilja barrel, got the buttplate, stock sent off to duplicate.  Now if I can just get to the top of the list of a certain nationally known gunsmith.......  Maybe get it done by sometime this summer.

With this one sent off, I started laying out the stock on my 270 Ren Falling Block Works last night.  It'll be my next stock project.  It's already barreled and scoped, just needs some wood to shoot.

Why are you going to shoot WOOD?  Most of us use targets of either paper or steel!   Grin   Grin   Grin
Just couldn't resist, Froggie
