the size is 5/16"-22 tpi, and you won't find any dies for it-if you need a new one you'le have to buy one or make it yourself by single-tooling it on a lathe, slow but not hard to do if you're into machining(my dad was a machinest for the navy for thiry years). Good luck.

Nailman, the two references I have state 5/16" - 24tpi or 5/16 - 22tpi for the stock bolt thread size. You could try a 5/16-24 bolt and see if it screws in correctly, if it does not fit it is probably the 5/16-22tpi.

5/16-24 dies should be available at your local well stocked hardware store as it is US standard fine thread, a 5/16-22 is a special thread size, 1 1/2" OD die's are available through Travers Tool Company ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) for about $15.00.

Good Luck on your project Smiley,
Mike

nailman;
I have a crude way of making this bolt but it works.
The thread is 5/16--22---make a soft bolt [anneal if nessary] of 5/16 --24 and screw it in the Ballard frame a couple of times and then harden said bolt.  This bolt size 5/16--22 may be available but IMO the die would cost too much to make a couple Ballard stock bolts.   leadball

A die can be bought for $10.64 I think that is cheap enought. I want to shorten a bolt and chase the threads a little further down. I'll order one in a few days. Who know maybe some here will sell me one. THANKS, Nailman....

Nailman,

Or...... Maybe you would be willing to loan your die out for a small fee to someone else that might need to make a bolt. I've seen many an action on the tables at a gun show with no stock bolts. They gotta come from somewhere.

Here's an idea to..... Ballard Rifle Co. says their parts are interchangeable with the originals. So, what about the stock bolt?

ballard rifle company's stock bolts are interchangeable with an original-i had to drill an original out to remove it and replaced it with one of theirs(i was too lazy to make a new one myself)

Ballard Rifles list online the price of their stock bolt as $15.00. I would not spend much time trying to make one when I could get it for that relatively small amount.

FWIW

I got the bolt I just want to make it shorter and then I want to run a tap in the hole on the action. It don't do any good to order a stock bolt and have the same lenght as I have!!!

Mr. Nailman:

Two other solutions come to mind. The simplist would be to put a spacer under the head of the bolt to adjust the length. There should be room for a considerable length of "washer" before the bolt head reaches the butt plate.

Another option is to cut a piece out of the middle of the bold and weld it back together. Not the most elegant solution but it would solve your problem. You could even do a mortise and tenon thing and silver the halves together. That would work as well.

Glenn & Nailman,

Not to sure about enuf room to put washers in the Ballard butt stock to shorten the bolt. My Schoyen-Ballard came with the original stock and an offhand stock Schoyen(?) made. There isn't enuf room in either to put much more than a 1/16" spacer in, and on my particular rifle the bolt has a beveled head, on the threaded side, and the existing washer has a recess to fit it. Since this is the only original I own it might be that others are set up differently.

But, why not order a bolt from BRC, and see if they will shorten it, and extend the threads, for you. That way you don't have to screw up an original, which someone could buy off you. Also, Nailman doesn't say whether he's replacing the stock, or altering the original, but if the former, when he sold the rifle the new owner could put the original back on without having to come up with another bolt.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Original Ballard bolts had a solid steel thick washer underneath them. These can easily be tapped out, and filled underneath with bedding compound. If you measure the depth beforehand, you can tap the spacer back in, stopping at a shallower depth.
Another trick is to get a piece of 5/16" running thread, and cut it to length, then simply run a washer and nut down into the stock hole, until it's snug.
