Low Wall Project - Going to need parts
Jun 11th, 2005 at 7:10pm
Print Post
I've just started a project to ressurect a Low wall receiver which is missing most of its internal parts.  The plan is to fit a #2 barrel in .32-40 and set it up with SST. It will be used for both OH and bench.  Any suggestions for locating parts?  I have a couple of High wall hammers and several High wall blocks as trading stock.
Thanks in advance for any help! ???

(The blame for project is squarely on Keith Foster and Don Howe.  If I hadn't been roped into getting to Beeson I'd still be focused on building that long range bolt gun for 100 yards at Camp Perry.) Undecided

Jerry,

I am very happy to take part of the blame.

But it was Don mostly, really it was.

But HE said it was YOU! Grin

I just knew I'd wind up there eventually.
I just know there's a .32-40 Ballard in my future.
If I can just manage to get one before I'm too decrepit  to shoot it ...

Jerry,

Is this a coil spring or a flat (main-) spring rifle?  I have a low wall hammer for the flat spring that I would gladly trade for a high-wall hammer...in fact, I think I have one already slit for the fly, a feature you will probably need for a set trigger.

If you have a "smooth side" low-wall (ie without the flares) I may even have a really ratty old breech block for it, if you can't do any better.  It will have to be bushed from RF, but that shouldn't be a problem.  I'll have to get into my parts bins and see what else I might be able to spare...do you have an extractor yet?

BTW, I had an action at one time with one of your grandfather's barrels on it.  He or someone about the same time had made a speedlock conversion by shortening the distance to the sear notch and eliminating the half cock notch altogether.  Even with the SST that rifle had it seemed very quick on the hammer fall.  I'll try to get a work number for you if you would like to see if he left any info about the job??

Regards,
Froggie

JC,

A #2 wgt. barrel is going to be awfully light if you intend using it for bench & offhand competition. Would be great for hunting tho.

At the very least you should be looking at a #3 wgt. A #4 wgt. would be better!

Action is a flat spring type, I have a RF breechblock and will use it if I must, and also have a .32 RF extractor.  Available replacement forend wood for Low walls is cut for the #2 barrel which drives my selection. I'd prefer to build a High wall but funds simply don't exist, so I'll work with what I've got.

I have a lever which has been cut but have both parts to get welded up to original configuration.

If your frame is the flat-side then it will take a #2 bbl at the largest unless you cut a relief at the breech end (at least two different ways). If it's the flare-side frame, it will take any size that the high wall will take, albeit with the smaller threads.

All high wall parts can be used in a low wall although they're shaped a little differently.

I probably have most of what you want in my parts bin including a good lever, contact me @ treeblood1 @ aol. com (lose the spaces).
Good luck, Joe
