Colt-Sharps Rifle??

Print Post
Hi All,

I saw a photo of a Colt-Sharps Single Shot Rifle and really liked what I saw. I have searched the Web for info and some for sale but have had no luck. I wonder if anyone here can point me in the right direction as far as information or a rifle for sale. I would really like to add one to my collection.

Thanks in advance,

Marcos (elalto)

These Colt/Sharps rifles must be quite scarce, I"ve seen ONE, in Lancaster. Ohio about ten years-ago and the price was $2000.    leadball

Colt-Sharps mfg 1970-1977.  Hammerless action chambered in .17 Bee, .22-250, .243, .25-06, 7mm Rem Mag, .30-06, and .375 H&H.  Deluxe stock, deep bluing, etc.  As I remember they were made in Europe and imported by Colt.  Expensive then and I expect moreso now as not very many were made or sold.  I have never seen one and many catalogs/lists don't mention them.  A Shooters Bible in the years of manufacture may yield more data.   2520

2520 is correct; They used a newly made Borchardt type
action and the high polish blue and stock finnish characterisic of a Weatherby. They didn't sell well. The type of shooter
that wanted a sporter in the offered calibers didn't want a
single shot - The type of shooter that wants a Borchardt as
a single shot does not want the offered calibers.........
Another brilliant marketing plan by an American manufacturer.
As I recall, Borchardt actions were availiable from Artistic
Arms for 1/3 the price.......  There  was one  on Auction Arms
a month ago - but I don't know what it went for...

I have a Colt Sharps in .30/06 and according to the Colt factory letter I sent away for only 502 were made and they were made in US not Europe. They are unique in that they have needle roller bearings in the action and a Canjar trigger with single stage and a set trigger and are the smoothest to operate comparing to Ruger No1 and Browning 1885. It is my favourite Single.

About a year ago there were a couple offered for sale in the "Single Shot Exchange" mag.   I bet you could get Brett Boyd (editor/publisher) to look it up & give you the contact info if you subscribe to the mag.   Ken

Saw one advertised at a gun show in Puyalup Washington a month ago. The price (If I remember right) was around $6,000.  I saw one several years ago in 222 Rem.

I had a friend who had one of the Colt Sharps in .220 Swift.

They sold for about $1600 new and for years they did not go up in value. Although the rifles were quite nice, they just didn't capture the American shooter.

In the early 1970's I attended college and worked at a sporting goods store in Long Beach, California. We sold two of the Colt-Sharps rifles, one was a 30-1906, the other was a 270. The rifles were actually made by a company named "Sharps Rifle Co." ,not to be confused with the original, which was later bought out by Colt which then assembled and finished the guns from parts on hand. At the time, I thought the actions were a bit clumsy and that the maker would have better served to have copied the original Borchardt design rather than try to improve on it. I never shot one of Colt-Sharps rifles, who knows, they might be good guns.

Hello,

In the 1972 Gun Digest, John Amber wrote a two page review of the Colt-Sharps rifle.  The cover of the 1972 Gun Digest has a painting of the rifle by James Triggs, and there is a color advertisement for Colt showing two of the rifles.

While checking, I found a review of the Sharps Arms Company Sharps 78 in the 1971 Gun Digest.  This five page review was written by Bob Hagel, and at the end of the article, there is a report of Colt buying the company.

Take care,

Steve Bryson

I believe the downfall for these things was their price.  Way back when they first came out, I was fascinated by them and wanted one in the very worst way. Unfortunately I also had a young family to feed. At the time, single shots were beinning to catch on a bit.  Ruger's No. 1 had been on the market for several years and was selling well, Browning was marketing their 78.  That is when Colt decided to get into the frey. At that time the Ruger could be had for around $265.00 and the Browning for about four. As I remember Colt was trying to get something in the range of $850.00.
Oh, by the way, I saw mentioned that there were 502 Colt/Sharps built.  The .222 that I saw, in private hands, several years ago was a toolroom model and did not have a seriel number, the only markings anywhere on it was the caliber on the barrel. I guess that would make it number 503. Sure wish I had bought that rifle, it was for sale for a price that makes me cry now.

I remember one that left the Colt factory while I worked there --- lunchbox gun.  Bet I know the original owner. Parts were slipped out Verrrrry slowly until the gun could be assembled.   Ken

At least one brand new action still exsists.

I took a tour of the Shilen Rifles, Inc. facility in Ennis, Texas last month and had the chance to meet Ed Shilen and the new owners. Ed got two Colt Sharps actions from Colt. He built one into a 22-250 beauty and the other action is still in the white. The varmit rifle was for sale but I don't know the price.

By the way if you are ever in or around Ennis, TX I would strongly recomend you call and take a tour as well.

I just bought a Colt Sharps in the CS21xx range. Shilen no longer works on these as I want mine re-barreled, and called. It was re-barreled some time ago with a no name 7mmSTW. Trying to find a smith to rebarrel mine to a better match.
