New Guy with Shlegel collection question

Hello all, First I would like to thank all of you for this great resource , I truly appreciate all your knowledge and insight on these rifles. I hope in the future I can contribute in some way.  I have been a Winchester collector for some time but I now have an interest in Stevens target rifles.  I am interested  in the Stevens-Pope # 54 Schuetzen in the Leland Schlegel auction.  I would very much appreciate any feedback on this rifle pertaining to originality, rarity and hopefully what you all think it should sell for.  Thanks very much   Chris

The catalog should be available on March 5th, and complete descriptions of the first 400 or so items should be on the web site around that time.

The top lot may be the trapdoor carbine that was probably captured by the Sioux at Little Bighorn.  The 1909 Colt serial #2 will also go high.

The Stevens-Pope 54?  If it hasn't been refinished, I doubt that it would go for less than $10,000.  The folks at Amoskeag will call a spade a spade-- if they think it has been refinished, they will say so.

I could realy go for that one. Lets see, if I sold 1/3 to 1/2 of my collection, I could possibly buy it. That would also solve my storage space problem. Think I will just continue my collection within mhy current budget for now.

Leland Schlegel had a reputation as a premier collector. His interests were muzzleloaders and single shots. At his death he may have had the most extensive collection of George Schalck guns and memorabilia in the country. He had a reputation for the finest of whatever he collected. For anybody who is near or passes through Louisville it is worth a stop to see the Schlegel display at the Frazier Museum. There is something about an entire case of Schalck rifles that takes ones breath away. For those of you that can’t there is an article in the next Journal on the opening of the display and the rifles that Schlegel that donated to the museum. For what its worth I thought that the Hepburn “A” grade was the highlight of the auction also the Ballard “A1” midrange. For a lot of collectors these rifles, unaltered and like they left the factory, are more desirable than rifles that have been altered, even by the likes of Harry Pope.
