Black powder shortage?
Oct 30th, 2026 at 11:18pm
Print Post
I just recently noticed that most of the black powder suppliers are nearly sold out of every brand and grade of black powder. Anyone know why? It reminds me of a few years back when post-COVID supply chain troubles caused smokeless and black powder shortages for several years. Hopefully this one won't last as long.

Mostly because of all the conflicts going on sporting grade bp is on the back burner, and the military use takes precedence

I learned a hard lesson from the covid days. Now when I buy powder, primers or 22s I get three times what I need as a hedge against future craziness. It don't go bad and and you can call me a hoarder but at least I'll be a shooting hoarder.

The only guys who call us hoarders are the ones who never plan ahead. They're jealous of anyone who does!

I decided to look for powder at a couple of sites. Buffalo Arms only had a couple of different grades as did Grafs and Sons, but they did have Swiss 1.5 at 59.95 a pound. Maine Powder House had a notice that they are indefinitely temporarily closed. Whatever that means. They did reference some production issues with Goex.

People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do.

I am running into this issue. I just used up the last of my swiss and the bit I could find was pricey.  Was able to grab some goex cartridge and old Eynsford off fellow shooters that will hopefully get me through when goex comes back online,  which rumor has it is the spring.

Bufallo Arms is taking backorders for swiss for a shipment in January,  that they estimated to be around $63/lb. An internet search showd tariffs may be affecting it more and that we may see $95/lb because there is an almost 50% tariff of the Swiss. We need US production back online

US production would be great, but how long since the machinery was used?
Kind of like the ad for an old car- "it was running when I parked it (x) years ago".
An even faster method to drop the price would be to get rid of tariffs.
You know, the ones that influence nearly every purchase we make.

Yup, If all the countries would drop the tariffs on the US products going to them, and we would stop putting tariffs on all incoming products, we really would have fair trade and level price exchange.

It doesn't seem like much progress from abroad is likely. Until then....

With separate-loading artillery shells the charge loaded last into the chamber holds a layer of black powder facing the breach.  It is there to reliably catch the sparks from the primer.  FWIW

But, also FWIW, I live a few miles from the Radford Army Ammunition plant and have not heard of them increasing production of recent.  They produce most of the powders that are granulated (small arms and artillery shells).

There's an ammunition plant in Cody that has been producing light artillery rounds and the news the other day said they were so swamped with orders they are building another plant in Romania or some such.
Goex has supposedly revamped and up graded the equipment  and word has it once they get caught up with the military supplies they will start shipping sporting grade powder, soon.
