32-40 3D barrel is here

The 3 dovetail (3D) 32-40 high wall barrel showed up today. I measured the twist at 1-16. The bore is excellent. It is an original barrel and may have been relined but the muzzle has lots of machining marks so it is hard to tell if it was relined or not. It will be a bit of a project. It screws on too far about an eighth of a turn. Currently a thin copper wire was easily crushed to get it to clock up. The flat spring dovetail was way too big. I used 4 layers of pop can as a shim to keep it from falling out. I had to switch breech blocks to find one that fit without removing metal from the barrel end. Depending on how it shoots as is will determine whether I set it back the 7/8 of a turn to get it to clock up with no shimming. That will dictate how I deal with making a custom flat spring hanger.  I have one ready to trim one side to fit that is currently 1/4” too wide. I won’t fit it until I decide to set the barrel back. I spent a couple of hours trying different extractors until I found one that was a close fit. I just need to carefully remove some excess that is sticking onto the chamber. Luckily the extractor cut is deep so it shouldn’t need and machining if I set the barrel back. I haven’t tried one of my forends yet but will probably need to sand out the channel a bit to make it fit. I hope to have it ready for my next Thursday range day.
The hole in the barrel threads wasn’t deep enough to implement the gas operated lever system do I will have to put that project on hold.

Screeeeech!. That is the sound of me stomping on the brakes with this project. My original plan was to demote the 38-70 barrel to ‘Old Rusty’ an octagon top action that at one time had evidently gotten rusted and cleaned up leaving lots of pits. I picked it up with a nice buttstock and a .22 barrel several years back at the Oregon Arms show. It has been the test action or ‘where should I put this barrel?’ Action for the last several years. Then while laying awake last night I thought, why not just put the 38-70 barrel back on the nicer action that it had been on where everything fit well and put the 3D 32-40 barrel on Old Rusty and deal with the issues I mentioned in the original post with that action. It only took 15 min to put the 38-70 back together and park it in the safe. I had tried the 3D barrel on Old Rusty and knew I would have to bevel the protruding edge on the action to get it to clear the corners of the 3D octagon #3+ barrel. Once I did that it ended up clocking easily without over rotating like it did on the newer action. Then I test fired it before moving on the fitting the extractor and the primer strike was not low like it was yesterday. Then I inserted the extractor that protruded into the chamber yesterday with the newer action and lo and behold it fit perfectly. Just goes to show you that the older actions are not always 100% the same as newer ones. I just need to find some wood that fits, add scope blocks and I am all set. I think Old Rusty may have finally found a permanent barrel. Time to find some more parts to play with.

Well the forend was a bust for now. Of the several holes in the barrel, none line up correctly. I don’t have a forend that fits anyway. I did tape one with a large round channel in place for now. The rear scope block holes were 8-40 just like the 38-70 barrel. The front were 6-48 but were 4” ahead of the 7.2” spacing and were not spaced for any blocks I have a bit over the .560 needed so I drilled and tapped new ones. The first buttstock I grabbed didn’t fit but this ugly one did. It will work while I see how the barrel shoots.
