How much should I budget...?

I have a 38-55 repro that wants to identify as a 32-40.....

Lining with 32 caliber liner vs. profile, chamber, mount, finish a 32 cal barrel. I have the barrel blank.

Thanks for any opinions, pros / cons..?

Bob

A new liner is always going to be the cheapest. Usually around $500-$600 done. The new barrel will save a fair amount, but still the cost of contouring it, fitting, chambering, bluing, etc. is going to end up close to double the price of the lined barrel.

You could sell the 38-55 barrel to offset some of the cost of a new 32-40 barrel.

Sure Shot,

RE:
"You could sell the 38-55 barrel to offset some of the cost of a new 32-40 barrel. "

Yes, thank you.. That is under consideration as well.

I started to list all of my options in a earlier post but deleted same because it just got too wordy.

But thanks for your observation, it's appreciated.

This is the: 'wordy part'
I went a little crazy over the past year buying 6 different 32 caliber barrels. Two are gain twist, One of which is thin (1") and the other fat (#4 at least, Ron Smith Stainless 11.5 twist) a couple of octagons. A 1137 alloy, which was fully disclosed / as advertised by the seller  but foolishly unbeknown to me at the time (as marked) is a Black Powder Only alloy.

Research tells me that even though it's stamped for "Blk. Pwder Only", the yield strength of 1137 (AISI 1137 carbon steel) is anywhere between 55,000 psi and 94,000 PSi depending on how it was formed (hot vs. cold)

• RE: 1137 Alloy, ;
Cold Drawn / Cold Finished: 82,000 psi (approx. 565 MPa). This is the most common state for specialized resulfurized bar stocks used in manufacturing. Some high-temper cold-drawn variants can reach up to 94,000 psi (650 MPa).
• Hot Rolled / Normalized: 55,000 psi to 57,500 psi (approx. 380 MPa).
• Annealed: 50,000 psi

Given that a 32-40 SAMMI limit is only about 30,000 CUP, I believe I can use any one of the barrels for up to a 32 RKS..

I'm going to have to invest in "Quick Load"  first, to be sure.
