Some promising results with breech seating.  BP was a bust.

Then it's a good thing I burned the targets.  The BP load had a horrendous velocity spread and a 12"+ verticle group.

Something that might help with straight BP is 2 1/2 Rem primers.

That's what all the slug gun shooter used was either 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 primers.

You could always try duplexing too. 7 - 10 gr of 4759. 4759 also likes 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 primers.

I have had good luck with CCI 200 primers and BP. I am going to cut back in my powder charge a bit as I was getting some shots close to 1350 fps. Going to try another bullet if I can get it to fit.

Best I did with my .38-50 Remington Hepburn was six Chickens.
Never verified its group size on paper.
Used Rem 9 1/2 M primers over 50 grains Swiss FFFg with a newspaper wad inside over flash channel with a 310 grain Money bullet.
Yes she would knock over Rams but very slowly.

In my experience the first thing to change if the groups are super terrible is the bullet.  I believe that black powder is more susceptible to poor bullet fit because of the fast bump up.  Another thing that I've seen cause terrible group size is some of the super hard Starline brass out there.   If you haven't tried it Jack I'd anneal 10 of them to be quite soft at the case mouth and for an inch below that.

Chris.

Chris,
Thanks for the advise.  I suspected the bullet first off. I dug out some 340 gr bullets I cast years ago and sized a few of my 304 gr Saecos so they would fit.  They are ready to test tomorrow if the weather is not too bad I think I have 5 or 6 cases left over. I may try to anneal them today and load them up as well

Jack
