Can anyone share some of your expert knowledge on interpreting these markings?  I know the 285 is the Pope barrel number.

Thanks

Jack

You need to buy the book/books. Now that you're a Pope rifle owner.

I forgot. I did buy the books. Just need to wash the peanut butter and jam off my fingers.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

The 1.41 is a very common number on Pope barrels and I believe it told Pope the setup on his rifling machine to get a particular gain in the twist. The 21 over it is the twist rate but might be the starting twist before the 1.41 gain? No idea with the letters are. Maybe the guy he made the barrel for?

Vall hit the nail on the head with the rifling machine numbers. The one paragraph in book 1 mentions it and shows a photo with the same numbers.

Winchester barrel I took pictures of yesterday.  Same codes. 32 cal. barrel and the #1 stamp looks similar.

The Hartford Pope book says that round dimple is where the rifling machine gripped the barrel.  Interesting that mine does not have that.
