mold burrs

Hello everyone!

I am having some problems with my bullet mold not wanting to open. It will start to open then hang up. If I apply more force, the mold will open but the bullet will be scarred along the separation line. I found the burrs that were causing the problem, and with a small half round India stone I was able to remove them, which more or less fixes the problem. What I would like to know for future reference is :  How does a bullet mold develop a burr in the first place?  I am as careful as I can be when handling the mold and casting bullets, I never hit the mold blocks with my mold mallet. Would like to prevent this from happening in the future. The mold in question is made of aluminum.

Aluminum is soft, problem number 1. There are numerous kinds and hardness of aluminum available and I would assume most mould makers would use the hardest suitable for their product, but perhaps not hard enough.

Joe, the burrs were already there when you purchased the mold.
