Breech seating tool adjustment

At our local CBA matches I’ve been experimenting with the adjustment feature on my breech seating tool. How far into the throat area does it push the bullet into place?

The Randolph book, Schuetzen shooting for the new shooter, suggests adjusting the tool so the start of the barrel land marks are about halfway onto the bullet’s (lowest) base band. I messed around with doing that and even farther down on the base band. I eventually settled on having the barrel marks just short of the base band. I recorded the distance the “seating plug” extends beyond the case mouth in all of the trials.

The judgement criteria was 100-yard 10-round group size. You know the old adage…almost anyone can shoot a nice 5-round group but adding five more shots can cause some of us “severe angst”, even ruining the group.

However, variables such as barrel characteristics and load variables like bullet size, design and alloy, powder type and weight, primer details, etc. will impact results. And the bench set-up, ambient conditions and of course the SHOOTER, are also influential.

FWIW

I adjust depth of breech seating so the lands impress half way through the base band. Usually leave it alone. Not much interest in BR shooting.

BR shooting has turned some of us into neurotic jibbering idgets. I am prone to that. If I shoot a decent score from the bench I'm happy with it.

Being a dyed in the wool neurotic jibbering idget, I have 5 32-40 breech seaters for my 4 high walls.  All are set to different seating depths.  I manage to have that many since I keep the ones that have manufacturing defects. I think my average is one mistake for every 6 I make for sale.  I typically adjust so there is about 1/4 of the base band engraved.

Jack.

At one time Russ Weber lectured me at length about seating depths, and yes, it's worthwhile to have an adjustable breech-seater and to experiment with different seating depths. However, Wes is basically correct, shooting off the bench saps all your creative energy and hooks you like dope and will cause you great unhappiness in life.  Sad

I used to be a jibbering idiot, but one day I forgot the hex key needed to adjust my seater. I shot better than usual since I didn't need to concern myself about maybe improving with a different setting.

But offhand shooting saps all your physical energy and makes you dizzy trying to line up that moving target all the time.

Hmm.  Now I understand a little bit more about myself  Cheesy

One of the more interesting things I've read on breech seating depth is this little bit from the CPA web site on the 32-40 cartridge.

"Our rifles are taper throated from .322 to .314 in about 7/8” length, and a matching bullet can be easily seated perfectly and without distortion.  Seated this way in the taper throated chamber, the bullet will have rifling marks its full length except for the base band."

I have used two breech seating methods. the one I started with was Ron Longs method. In all cases, the base band has to be larger than the throat and/or groove.

.035 - .050 of the base band, left unengraved. If you have a freebored throat, it can be hard to measure, because there will be no rifling lands visible, just a faint ring. A felt pen helps.

The other method is how Russ Weber did it.

You put the bullet that your using, in a case, base band first. The case has to have a means of pushing the bullet forward, such as a 1/4 x 20 thread. Or you can use your breech seater if it has enough travel.

You then push the base band forward until it contacts the throat. Take it out and set your breech seater piston at that same length.

Doing it that way, bullets with larger base bands will have a shorter seating depth than smaller ones. I think it's a little better way and what I used last.

interestingly, I had been shooting a .32-40 for a long while and had, in that time, located the point that worked best overall with the 'favorite' bullet. After arriving here at this site years later, I learned of the method Frank spoke of using the bullet backward in the seater. Guess what? It turned out that Mr. Webber's method as Frank explained would have been right where a thousand bullets finally said the same setting would be good. Smart cookie, that Webber feller Smiley

Here is my breech seating intrument and one of the bullets I will be testing in the Binger Banger Winchester. Unfortunately the breech seater will not work with a scope mounted on the rifle. Oh well, I do just about as well with iron sights as I do with a new fangled scope sight.

You can see where the lands impress the base band. This with the seater adjusted even with the end of the case. A little past center but that's okay with me. So that is about as close as I can get without changing my seater. The instrument by the way is for a 32-40 but works fine in the 33-40.

Thanks everyone for the input and experiences that you have had. You’ve given me some homework!
(Is it breach or breech?)

I have two range tests to re-do. The first with the tool adjusted to insert the bullet with the marks on the bullet just short of the bottom base band as noted in Gunlaker’s CPA suggestion above. The second with the barrel marks 1/2 way onto the base band. Little things count!

little things do count- and spell: breech, breech, breech. Smiley
let us hear what happens with that testing.

That testing might not happen until next spring. We just had our last CBA match this past Saturday and my Fall is starting to fill up with lots of family events. Winter up here in MN is a deterent!

A quote from Justice Clarence Thomas…
“Everybody has a will to win. What’s far more important is having the will to prepare to win.”

But I will report back whenever the testing is completed.

Back around 2013 or so John Louis and I were discussing bullet seating depth at one of our practice days before the monthly match at the Modesto Rifle Club.

Long story short, after a day of testing we both settled on fully (but just barely fully) engraving the base band of the bullet with rifling.

We freely shared that information and it worked for some, but probably not for everyone. Most of the local shooters ended up fully engraving their bullets. Back in the day when we were all younger we posted some pretty good scores every month.

The lesson is, don't get stuck on what has been handed down as gospel on any of this, especially in bench rest shooting. Step outside of the box and experiment.

those that have a chamber and throat 'designed' to fit a particular bullet shape my have an advantage and ability to place the depth of engraving at their chosen place. Great if you have a rifle rebarreled, but for us who enjoy getting what we can from a variety of factory chambers the old advice and practice is simply going to need experiments. Call it fun, and keep track of the results it can be a great teacher for the given tube, but some may pertain to another down the road. The big idea is to have fun even if you don't match that dedicated bench gun's ability. Works for me.

I don't have one rifle with a special throat for one particular bullet. Don't understand the concept either. Have heard shooters talk about it.

I don't know whether this will work for everyone. but I seat my bullets, regardless of type, like a stopper. Then I put in a primed case (no powder) and pop the cap.  If I just get a little pop, I open the block and the case ejects smartly from the store pressure.  Adjustment finished! Mark your seater and lock adjustment.

kinda my point, Joe, what I'm saying is with a bit of looking the ordinary stuff might be as good as the most expensive and scientific version out there. You shoot those rifles proudly, now, don't ya hear?

Froggie,

When did you shoot your last match and report the score? Just curious if it was in the smokeless era.

I remember when Chuck Bordman was blowing primers at Spokane. His Manley Oakley breech seater went out of adjustments so the bullets were not fully seated. Caused gas cutting damage to his Hoch breech block.

A lot of times it was Chuck who was out of adjustment but that time it was a his breech seater.
