Color Case Hardening

I'm about ready to play around with some color case hardening.  I have made my own bone charcoal and hardwood charcoal which I will mix 50/50 for packing around the parts.  What is the ideal particle size for the charcoal?  How fine should I crush it?

The Brownells sieve size is 10/28, that might come out to a range of 2 to .6 mm.
