40-70 load

Took my "not quite original" Hepburn to the range this morning and tried the Unique load that was suggested to me. Got a best three shot group of 1.800 inches with a called flyer as I pulled the shot. I am very pleased with the less recoil of the 400gr Brooks bullet too. Shot 40 rounds without too much discomfort. Much less fouling than the 4198 load I was using. I need to cast some more but it was 105 degrees here today so I may have to wait till it cools off some.

105*  !!!!  Too hot for me. That is about 25* hotter than here at 6000ft elevation in Montana.
I did some loading and shooting today with a 22 Lovell and a 230 Ackley mag.  It was perfect shooting weather.

It is typical for the summer here in middle Ga. Temps last week were in the mid nienties all week and with the humidity the "feels like" temperature is about 105. You never get used to it you just learn to live with it. Do your work in the early morning before 11:00am or around midnight. I try to shoot around 8:00 before it gets hot.

JHM- Care to share with us the details of your 40-70 Unique load? I'm having the same issues with 4198.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

My .40-70's all shoot fantastic with my 410 grain Lyman Snover bullet and 23.0 grs. of 4198. Very accurate and very small deviations between shots.

My best group was 1.5 at 100 yards with another one 1.8 inches and with noticeably less fouling. Less recoil too. Shot 40 rounds without a recoil pad and was a little sore but not bad. Got to cast me up some more bullets when it cools down or maybe do it at night. This Hepburn has a liner made from a new Badger cut rifled barrel I picked up a few years ago so it is going to need some more break in shooting. I am satisfied for now...

You mean some folks really do shoot smokeless powder in their 40-70's?  Welp, whooda thunk it?

My Shiloh #1 Sporter in 40-70 SS consistently shoots BP into 1 MOA, OR LESS, at 100 yards.  I've never tried smokeless in the rifle in 30 years.

All being said, the 40-70SS is quite a cartridge, smokeless or BP.

If I had a ready supply of black I would like to try some. Can't easily find it here and to order some is crazy expensive. 1 MOA huh? Now you got MY interest up. I have shot black in the past in my 50-70 but used it up and don't have any on hand. Got a friend who might have some. Going to give him a call...

a couple of examples of minute of angle from my HI Wall 40-65
straight black powder loads.  Group at 100 is DDEPP 371 gr over 78 gr Swiss 1.5
and the Plot at 800yds is from same rifle with 370 gr Minigroove
bullet from before I went to PP.
