38/40 load info

I just got a pretty nice #2 roller in 38/40 and I'm almost set up to load for it. I've been shooting some old Winchester factory stuff and accuracy looks promising. I plan to take it out for deer this year and would like to push a 185 grain bullet at about 1000 fps if it can be done safely. Any suggestions on loads? Of course accuracy trumps velocity but for deer I would like to have as much horsepower as I can get.  Thanks

When l had a uberti low wall in. 38-40 l used a cast lee 180gr tc with 7.5 grains of unique. I don't remember the velocity but it would do a number on wood chucks. One advantage is that you can use jacketed bullets that are meant for a. 40 s&w and they work fine for hunting in a 38-40  I'll try to find my notes and see if I ever chronographed the load.

FWIW here's a page out of Ken Water's Pet Loads. Your #2 should be loaded to Group 1 levels.

A 180 grain cast bullet and a case full (32-35gr) of 2 or 3F black will get you up over 1000 without any problems and its a safe load in a roller. 
It should shoot fairly well and with a good lube you should be able to get a few follow up shots with out any fouling problems

With 180 grain bullet, 32 grains 3f black, or 22.5 grains blachotn, 209 , or 12.5 grains of bludot will get you where you want to be
