New Mfg. .45-70 case lengths

Does someone know which brand of brass runs the longest new out of the box? I know Starline is probably the shortest, what about Hornady, Winchester or Remington? I would like to have fire formed cases than are at least 2.1" plus.
Yes I did post this on another site but no answer.

Hornady brass is the shortest at 2.0" because they make their brass to work with their levermatic bullet rather than following industry standards most other brass is 2.09"- 2.095" ish. Winchester is the thinist, Remington and starline are about the same thickness but some new Remington seems a little thin sometimes. I have found that the hornady brass is good for making  .40-65 cases from without having to trim off extra length.

Maximum SAAMI length for the .45-70 is 2.105" long.

Manufacturers generally produce cases .010" shorter than maximum length to allow for length expansion stretch when fired.

Cases longer than maximum can curl inwards restricting the bullet release and result in an excessive increase in pressures.
Therefore it is always recommended to never use cases longer than the maximum SAAMI specification and preferably less to allow for case length stretch upon firing.

I am surprised the Hornady cases are so short.

Standing at my lathe nibbing brass for the extra .010" makes me cringe. I have done enough of that. Really too bad new brass cant be had at the sammi std. Short cases are not ideal for my slip fit paper patch loads.

Doesn't everyone trim their brass to fit their chamber when reloading? I see no reason for manufacturers to make new brass short. It's up to us to check and trim our brass to equal, and proper length; not the maker.

I agree most of us have a trimmer. And if one is into reloading they surely should have one. Hard to really work up match grade ammo starting with irregular (ie Starline) short cases!

Equal and proper length is SHORTER (ussualy by .010") than the maximum SAAMI specification to allow for stretch to prevent over pressurization occurring from the brass mouth curling inwards by hitting the slope of the leade when the round is fired and the case stretches.

It is a safety measure followed by all manufacturers.
No one sells brass at the maximum SAAMI restriction stipulated.

Manufacturers allow for some case stretching when the case is fired and reloaders are supposed to ensure all cases are properly trimmed to proper safety lengths before reloading.

I've seen short 45-70 cases for a lot of years.  Most brass ends up being 2.090" after fireforming in a SAMMI chamber if you are lucky.

After they've been shot a bunch of times they'll eventually grow but it takes a lot of shots.

I've owned a few rifles that were more accurate by using Starline 45-90 and trimming them to 0.005" short of the actual chamber length.

The Hornady brass is short because the Hornady gummy tip bullets have their crimp cannelure in a non-standard spot.  I don't know why they made them that way.  Good for reforming into 40-65 though.

Just measured some Hornady 45-70 component brass that's been fired numerous times in my Shiloh #1 it measures 2.105 (that rifle loves that brass)
Happened to have two unopened packages of brand new Hornady 45-70 one the old style with the cardboard package with the ziplock bag inside, and a newer one that's just the plastic bag and they both measure 2.1 on the nose.

My Shiloh sure likes them as does the Winchester bpcr. Shoot mostly 446525's patched in Seth Cole paper in the Shiloh. The Winchester can kick some serious butt with those cases and the original postel bullet Zack Taylor had BACO reproduce.
