32-40 AA #9

A while back Dave (schuetzendave) told me they'd had better luck with AA #9 than with 4227.  I decided to do a test today with my CPA and it seems promising.   The muzzle velocities were way more consistent and I didn't even have to raise the muzzle like I do with my IMR-4227 loads.  It burned a little cleaner too.  I used Fed LR magnum match primers.

Best 100m 5-shot group was about 1380 fps and measured 0.6".   There also seemed to be something good at around 1420 fps but the winds were twitchier so it's not a fair comparison.

Chris.

More powder. Get up over 1500fps then you're doing business.

Mine is 218g in a 14 twist Shilen with 15.5g of H-108 (same as # 9).

I’m fairly new to the Schuetzen world. This is my second year of using a new CPA in our local matches.

However, having shot almost 30-years in CBA matches, I can recall Accurate #9 powder being used quite often by shooters in the Plain Base Bullet match rifle category. It seemed like everyone in the category used that powder.

I did use #9 in some revolver loads. But today it’s quite interesting to learn of the variety of other powders that you guys on this forum are fooling with in your single shot rifles.

I was shooting a 200gr bullet that Steve Brooks made for me.  A Pope style. I hadn't heard much of AA #9 in the 32-40 so I thought I'd start this post.

I've never tried anything in the 1500 fps range. When do you start running into pressure problems? The highest I've tried in my 32-40's has been in the mid 1400's which seems to work pretty well with my spitzer style molds.

Chris,
I don’t shoot #9 but with that 3 groove Borton/Darr designed bullet, I have upped my velocity using 4100 powder to just under 1500 fps in my 14 twist Green Mountain barreled high wall and it is shooting very well. I just finished a CBA match and despite a few wrong guesses when reading the wind came in a close second to the match director who is one of the best single shot shooter in the area who holds a couple of CBA national records. I used to strive for around 1450 but accuracy fell off in the wind. Out of the 40 shots today only a couple surprised me with their impact.

Interesting.  Well, I'll try it since it works for you and Jeff.   Since I only have 200m instead of 200 yards it might help.  It seems way easier to shoot small groups at 100m than at 200m right now.

I'm going to have to mix up a fresh batch of Alberta Schuetzen Lube.  CPA says they can't send Javelina out of the country.  Must be good stuff!   Right now I'm using the DGL lube I use for black powder shooting.  It seems to work, but it makes the bullets slippery like a greased pig.  It's sometimes hard to get them out of the tray and into the breech seater  Cheesy

My Ballard likes 13 grains of aa9 with the saeco 200 gr bullet lubed with Bullshop NASA.
Have found aa9 to work well in the 357 rifle also

Several of friends and I have used AA-9 in the 25-20ss. The initial results were very good with a 210 grain bullet at about 1500FPS. After the original test, we were never able to duplicate the results.
switched to different powders and the results then stayed consistent.

Wait, wait!  You were shooting a 210 grain bullet in a 25-20 SS?  How long was that bullet?  Was it perhaps a 110 gr bullet instead (still pretty heavy) or were you perhaps shooting a 32-40 instead?  I would definitely like some tried and true recipes for my 25-20 SS using AA#9 or H108, but I don’t know where I’d start looking for a bullet that heavy.

gunlaker, when I bought a Ruger #1 that had been rebarreled to 32-40 by Bud Welch it came with one of his moulds (about 185 -200 grain) and most of a 50 rd MTM case of rounds the previous owner had loaded with that bullet and a medium stout load of 4227.  Those were among the most accurate fixed loads I’ve ever shot.  Unfortunately I resold the rifle and the mould went with it.  Embarrassed. I would have to say though, that it ispossible to get good results with 4227 with the right bullet.
