Surplus SR4759
Jul 7th, 2026 at 7:27am
Print Post
Awhile ago I purchased a 6lb jug of what is supposed to be surplus SR4759. When my original SR4759 supply ran out, I opened this surplus jug. It sure was not 4759! My question is has any other shooters has tried this powder. Plus any idea where it lies in the burning rate chart. I believe it has a quicker burning than SR4759. Here is a pic of the label.

I’ve always heard, can’t confirm, US used 4759 for training loads in bolt action guns. That would make a jug of government 4759  80 # years old. Doubt if it was used in gas operated guns.

Will have a look at “Hatchers Notebook” see if I can find d a reference

Thanks Boats,

I purchased this jug roughly 2003. If my memory is any good thought it was from McGwen, Tenn. But can not be certain.

Can’t find any reference to 4759 in Hatchers Notebook. He does mention many of the period DuPont powders. Will look into it other books from my Library

Wasn't SR-4759 (SR is Sporting Rifle vs IMR Improved Military Rifle) the replacement for the early SR-80?

It says it's '7641' right on the label.
I would email Hodgdon Powder Co and ask if they have any data or info on it.
Someone's word that it's the same as 4759 wouldn't make me use it in anything till I was assured of the burning rate or it's  equivalent to any other common powder.

Sorry getting back a bit late to reading and responding to everyone. Thanks to all for replying. I don't know if SR4759 was a replacement for SR80. But it is worth looking to see if that was the case. The explosion in Tenn. awhile back I do remember that. But I purchased this powder in the early 2003.
So lacking sufficient time to do in depth research, I sought help. You Gents have been kind enough to give opinions and thoughts.
Decided to take photos of the two different powders. The larger grain powder is 100% SR4759. The smaller grain is what I am trying to find out. I forget someone suggested it could be powder #7641. I have seen a lot of different powder numbers, never that number. Could be correct, I sure don't know. But once again thanks to all.

The explosion occured in 2025. Do you happen to remember where you acquired the powder?

There is a vague reference to that power in this thread posted by a guy who goes by "sundog"

"sundog" says possible pull down from 30 Carbine. Hodgdon does have 4759 loads for 30 Carbine.

"approximate" burn rate : (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Freedom Club,

What calibers did you use  that powder in? I had to hope to use it in a 30-20 wild cat, of the ole Thompson Center cartridge. But in a low wall Winchester with 125-150 grain cast bullets.

I'd have to find my old notes.i burned lots of  it a couple 310 Cadets and a 32-20 Stevens.i used H4227 as a reference. It's superb  in the 22-250 with cast  gascheck bullets.
