Stocking a straight-grip Borchardt... a new trick!

I thought I'd share this adventure with some of my maker friends on this Gunsmithing SS forum.

I normally like to fit and inlet buttstocks with an "alignment spud" - usually just a straight rod that fits the "through the stock" bored hole. This maintains alignment between the receiver and the stock bolt hole throughout the inletting process - very important!

The Borchardt thread on my receiver was the standard 7/16"-14 tpi so I turned and threaded a 6" long piece of 1/2" 1018 and then realized this wasn't going to work too well - i.e. At ALL! - since there is a pocket against the rear abutment face of the receiver that is wider (.290") than at the ends of the tangs (.235") where we start the fitting.

So... what to do about this?? If only this was at least parallel to the bottom of the top tang (see pics)...

Hmmm!?! If I made a tapered alignment spud that would fix this problem!! So, I set about to do just that. Some pics shows this issue better...

This sure made it easy to get the inletting done accurately and quickly! Stockbolt cinched up nice and tight with no gaps = Happy Camper!

So sharing this with others as I'm sure there will be others restocking old Borchardt's like myself (I have a few Borchardt actions to stock!)... and there might also be other rifles presenting the same angled stock bolt issue? Would be curious if anyone knows of such?

A picture of the newly married firewood stock blank! ...and a forend candidate - "...a little powder and paint will make a lady what she ain't!" as my daddy always warned me Wink

Cheers!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who raids the firewood rack for stock materials. Grin

Thanks guys!
I do enjoy stocking work… having some fun for sure!
This bit of black walnut came from a coworkers tree that died… the rest of it sadly was all burned! This was all he could find me that was left… some nice tight fiddleback in this buttstock.
That gnarly piece for the forend looks pretty dramatic Smiley but actually should work fine. I do have another smaller piece though that I may use instead however… still deciding Smiley
Cheers!
Jeff P

Happy 4th of July to all my friends here!
