I need to find a hammer

Ok so I don't know what happened but I was cleaning my 0441/2 today and was putting the hammer back in when it broke  where the screw hole is. Now I need to find a hammer. Anybody have one I can buy, or know where to find one? It has a 1/2 cock fly in it, don't know if that  matters or not.  message me if you have one you want  to sell. thanks John

Try CPA rifles they make a current production 44 1/2 and the parts might interchange. They also list some newly made parts for original 44's and 44 1/2's

CPA, according to their site, only makes a hammer that that fits their rifles and not original Stevens models.

Is this the hammer that is known to crack but it doesn't hurt anything?

That would be a Ballard hammer.

I have no idea if it's a problem with a Stevens hammer.

I'm not a complete idiot, some of my parts are missing.

Broke into 2 pieces right through the pivot hole. Would a 441/2 hammer work?

The new owners must have changed things then because they use to offer some parts for original 44's and 44 1/2's .

CPA still has original Stevens parts, they have been out of original hammers for more than a year, maybe closer to two.

In a pinch, a CPA hammer could be used. The problem is that it will only contact probably less than 1/3 of the firing pin.

The hammer for the 044 1/2 and 44 1/2 is the same.

Last time I needed a hammer for a 44 I made it from scratch. There are 4 different hammers for the 44 and none work for the 44&1/2 as far as I know. Most likely I can make one for the 44&1/2 if I have a pattern to work from.

I made a 44 1/2 hammer while scratch building a rifle.

John, the hammer is not any harder to make than a 44 hammer except for the fly slot.  If the 044 1/2 has a centered fly, the slot has to be cut to the proper depth, front and back, so the fly stops properly each direction.

Of course you probably know the lump on the front of the hammer is not for looks.  Leave a little extra material there so you can adjust the timing of the hammer lifting off the firing pin.  This is more important on the 44 1/2 or the 044 1/2 because the breech block moving straight down at the start of the action opening versus the 44 rolling back.

There was a hammer on ebay a couple of weeks ago. It's long gone now. You don't see 44 1/2 hammers come up for sale very often.
