.38-72 loads?

A friend has a CPA with a .38-72 barrel and is looking for starting loads. Any suggestions?

I'd look at loads for .40-65 as they should be very close. Are you wanting smokeless loads, or BP?

My experience with that ctg is that BP works very nice.  Give FFG a chance with it.  Many who are not experienced with BP are leery of using it.  After each shot, give it a pass with a piece of flannel squeezed out (nearly dry) with 10 % soluble oil in water.  This leaves the bore perfectly clean and SLIGHTLY damp with the oil.  The flannel mops are easily washed for re-use by throwing  them into the laundry in small bags.  Small ultra-sonic cleaner works great for cleaning the ctgs.

Try 4198 in it with a bullet around 255 grs. I'd use 23.0 grs as that will be lower pressure than BP is. Could go much heavier if the CPA barrel is a faster twist rate.
