.44-40 loads with 4100 Accurate Arms powder
Yesterday at 6:49am
Print Post
Has anyone had any experience loading the .44-40 with Accurate Arms 4100 powder? For years I have used 8 grains of Unique and a 200 grain bullet, but my supply of Unique is running out. I do have a good supply of 4100 and am wondering if I could substitute 4100 for Unique.

I had the same problem of running low on Unique which I use a lot of. I combed the internet and almost got scammed but finally found a legit outfit that had it in stock and bought 4 lbs with no problem. Right now an outfit called Miwall Corp shows  6 lbs in stock and they seem to be legit. I load 8.5 grains in the 44/40 for my deer load in a Stevens 44 and have no desire to change.

My local gun store has Unique, but I choke every time I see the $50 per pound price tag.

4100 is too slow burning for the safe pressures of the 44-40. If loaded to where it burns clean pressures will be too high.  If loaded to safe pressures it will be very dirty and likely leave unburned powder in the barrel .
4100 is a good magnum pistol powder which the 44-40 is not.

maybe try good ol' 2400 or 4227? Use loads that are like .44spl for starters.

I like 15.5 grains of 2400 in my ‘92 Winchester.

I use the same load in my Stevens 44 1/2 in .44-40.

Thanks everyone for your commentary. $50 a pound Unique? It's amazing the prices on some of this stuff. I see Swiss BP advertised at $60 per lb.

CalledFlyer, you mention 4227. I have a good supply of this. What would you recommend for a charge?

Thanks

I am certain the loading books have that powder listed in the appropriate caliber's section. It's an ancient use for the stuff. I never loaded the round, but if you have no listing for the .44-40, try the same things that the .44 spl can take and build up a bit at a time from them.
I am guessing that the load of 2400 mentioned above is in the higher range of pressure for this one, but the slightly slower 4227 might get to that limit. Go slow, though. Keep us informed.

4100 would be a bit dicey in the 44wcf. You would have to ectrapulate your own loads. In a fully modern made gun you might get by with it.
Bludot is my favorite smokeless in the 44&38 wcf as well as the 45 colt

The load for my Ballard is 12.5 grains of 4759 under a 220 grain bullet but my barrel is a rebore to full .429 by La Bounty.
