scope clearance

I recently bought a Dakota Sharps that had not been drilled and tapped for scope blocks so I had it done and just got it back. The problem is that when mounted on standard Unertl  bases the ear of the hammer hits the scope. It's not a large contact area and could be solved with some judicious grinding but I would hate to have to do that on a new rifle. I know that MVA sells riser blocks but I don't know if they would give me enough clearance. Any suggestions?

Steve Earle makes all sorts of those style blocks. Maybe he could help?

The MVA blocks get quite tall. If the hammer just touches the scope, getting 2 should give you more than enough clearance.  Could also just replace the rear to a taller block, but that could cause elevation issues...

You might want to check scope height of in shooting position looking through the scope. If you have to hold your head in an unnatural position to see through the scope, you will want to correct that.

If the scope is already too high, getting it to clear the hammer Wil only make that worse. If it’s too low, raising it corrects both issues, as long as measure twice and buy once.

I’ve known folks that just bend the hammer tang a little to clear the scope and to keep it from slipping off the thumb when cocking  the hammer.

A picture would be good. How much farther do you need to raise it? I might have scope blocks that could do it.

Just what kind of scope did you mount on it? What is the ocular diameter?

Just out of curiosity I tried a Fecker, a Lyman and the scope that I want to use which is an MVA copy of a Winchester to see if there was any difference in the mount height, there wasn't. All the tubes are 3/4" and it looks like 1/4" more in height should do it. I could make a pair of risers but the screw length would be problematic. What a pickle, new rifle, 100 rounds loaded and tomorrow is supposed to be a beautiful day, shucks.

MVA has scope blocks to accommodate center or side hammer rifles.

Clearing the scope tube is one issue, but you also need to be able to get your thumb on the hammer to be able to cock it or lower it.

You might be able to modify one of these to fit your rifle if need be.
