Westley,

Looking at your last target, there seems to be an abundance of stringing. This can be caused by the case leaking, or not quite enough powder. The holes seem to be nice and round. You might could flare the mouth of your case a bit, and you might come up a little to 17½ grains of 4227. Just a suggestion....

Set my elbow on the glove when I shoot. Elbow softner. Lot's of shooters use some sort of pad.

When it comes to scenery here, it's perty sparse.
Michael Jackson? Didn't she pass on? She did a hell of a moon walk...  Wink

El Boberto, I did the mouth flaring so no leakage. The wind was so bad I was happy to get on target and get some trigger time. The new Winchester case is a little long so I will trim that to length. Yes more powder might be needed. 17.2 has been a good charge in my other 38-55s. Will experiment with breech seating depth also. This Ballard has a very short lead in. Has not been tampered with. Nice. I bet it shoots fixed good. BP fixed maybe.

Bullet candidate # 5. Saeco 570 F9G. .377X.372. I've had good luck with this style bullet when cast in soft alloy.

folks come here and say nothing to be seen. heck, it's just that they are used to looking at their trees from arm's length, not seventy miles away.

ah, an elbow pad. I have a nice fluffy blanket that I cover the bench with- guess I just already had what yer glove is doing, huh?

Speaking of 38-55 accuracy. One day at Hamilton they had a 20 shot 200 yard BR match on one target. I told the Schuetzenmeister it wouldn't work because the target would be hard to score. As usual I was asked to shut up and just shoot. The Schuetzenmeister scored the target, lol.

Wes was drawing a picture like the old time exhibition shooters.  Pretty good likeness.

In the auction pictures the wood on this Ballard looked like some sort of cheap mahogany. The wood is actually nice quarter sawed Claro with nice color. The checkering is oustanding.
Needs panels in the lever.

A happy Wes just got home from a shooting session with the new Ballard. Used my trusty Redding powder measure this time to shoot several three inch groups. Iron sights, no wind flags. Conditions were light wind. No camera so no pictures.

The Saeco 570 F9G is the most accurate bullet so far. Perty sure it's a Barry Darr design.

I, too, shoot illustrative targets. Joe shoots cartoon characters and symbols with precise aim. I shoot cartography targets- my latest is a map of the Pony Express.  Embarrassed

Pony Express route map groups. That would indicate to me you don't use windflags either. So your groups are being effected by side winds.

Where I shoot here local is in a big draw on the side of a mountain with a huge valley below so I get variable tail winds in the morning and variable headwinds in the evening. A calm period in the morning and another in the evening.

Not sure what your wind conditions are like Pat but it sounds to me like you will do better using windflags to indicate side winds.

Well, we sure do get wind in this joint. But, I'm sure that now and then the wind actually blows my shots where I hoped they would land. Give and take effect. No, Joe, that map, or another one looking like a guide to the galaxy is more a product of my poor aim.
I reality, while we get wind, I have learned what to expect at the local range and wait when it blows for the conditions to be as consistent as can be. Tried flags at one time, but got away from them at the handgun silhouette matches once held here. i'd be confused with flags at another venue, so I don't use them, or go anywhere. Dull, dull, I know. I get some verticle when i piddle with new loads, but that's fixable in no time flat. More powder, or abandon the idea. Problem solved.
