Mystery Cartrirdge

I found this cartridge in my stuff, yesterday and I can't figure out what it is.

The back of the rim is completely smooth with no markings.

I found about 3 that had a .477 case head but, they were all much longer cases.

I don't think the .400 band that is outside the case, is the actual bullet diameter, I think that maybe closer to .410 or more.

Any idea's?

Possibly a 40-70 Ballard if it has a small primer.

I considered that one but, my info on it is a .471 case head and a .430 neck diameter.

The only cases I could find with a .477 case head, was the 38/90 Win and the 40/85 Ballard and 40/90 Sharpes Straight.

All much longer.

Based on some of the cartridges I have, and book dimensions it wouldn’t surprise me either way. I have some new unfired cartridges that seem to vary by .003-5” in diameter and fired that are as much as .010” over new. But those often have a bulge.

I also wondered if it yours is a reload?

Only thing worse than figuring out some of these rifles is figuring out what the hell they shot out of them.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Frank, I have a couple original .40-63/70 Ballard cartridges and both are larger than what Cartridges of the World states as  base diameters. Both are around .471" at the base and drop right in all of my Ballard rifles chambered in this cartridge. The part that really puzzles me is the very large neck diameter that appears to be roll crimped down a lot?

Not sure what your saying.

I'm not ruling out a 40/63. I sold my Pacific, a few years ago so, I don't have it to try it in and that may be the reason I bought this cartridge, long ago.

Most of the collector cartridges I buy, from dealers, have the chambering written on on the case but, not this one.

I'm pretty sure it's a new factory case. It has the copper primer in it and feels fairly heavy, like it has BP in it.

Anyone have a factory loaded 40/63 to compare?

I did a search for 40/63 and found this 2013 post:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Here I stated that my 40/63 chamber neck, is .430 so, the .447 neck wouldn't chamber in mine.

Proportionally, the .447 neck, might mean that the bullet may be .437. that's in the range of 43 cal and 11mm. I have already looked at the 10 - 11mm Euro cartridges, w/o any match.

The last post, states that his 40/63 cases have the .477 case head that this one does?????

Might be worth looking a little harder for info on the 41 Wesson.
