muzzle loading 44

Just wondering if it would be feasible to make a muzzle loading barrel for a Stevens 44 using 209 primers. I thought about this last fall thinking that it would be neat if I could use the same rifle for our regular season, swap barrels and hunt in the special muzzleloader season. I'm not a black powder guy but I thought that this could give me more time in the woods.

About 40 years back I converted two dozen H&R shotguns to muzzle loader.. Most were 54 caliber an the ejector was reworked to fit the 209 primer. A 44 Stevens will work just fine. The one I did for myself used a 52 caliber Sharps barrel. Most of these were slug guns and about 2" of the barrel was cut off to make a bullet sizer. This made a mechanical fit of the bullet to the rifling.

Sounds like a fun project Mr Taylor. If a person were to choose to build one which H & R shotgun would be a usable candidate. Older one newer one?

H&R made the Huntsman, a muzzle loading rifle based on their single shot shotgun. Relatively easy to find a complete rifle or a barrel for one.

I think most any H&R could be converted to a muzzle loader. A few would require a smaller barrel diameter.
