Hi all newb here.  Just came into a combo gun, 12ga over 7x65R.  Break action. It is a 1990's manufacture.  I am looking for load data, advice.  I understand it is identical to the 7x64 but 1mm shorter and rimmed.  So close that 7x64 dies can be used by trimming off 1mm.  Also very similar to Rem 280.  But loads should be backed down to match pressure limits of break action -not bolt action.  I have a bunch of IMR powders, 4831.4895,3031.  Any cast bullet info?  not sure if in correct area tx all

I have a similar firearm, I have never fired it. I ask myself why did I want it, I don’t shoot a shotgun, but I did buy 40 rounds of S&B ammo. I read the same information as you. Basically 280 Remington reduced do to the weaker break open action. It has a single set rifle trigger.

I shot my Zoli 16/7x65R combination gun off the bench, with factory S&B ammo and it wasn't very comfortable.
I suppose that it would be fine standing or even with a rest, in a hunting situation.
I reloaded the empty cases with lead bullets and used Quick loads to find a load, using 4227 powder, at a velocity of 1600 fps.
It was accurate at 50 yards and very pleasant to shoot off the bench.
Unfortunately a computer crash has wiped the loading information from my computer. Sorry.

As I understand it, the 7x65R loads are already reduced from the 7x64 loads because the rimmed cartridges were expected to be used in all kinds of break open rifles (singles, doubles, combos, drillings) of many vintages. Mine happens to be a strong falling block single (Heeren) but I felt no need to even think about exceeding the data published for the 7x65R. It is a potent cartridge as is. That said here are some velocity figures I recorded for loads with the Speer 160 grain Grand Slam bullets at an OAL of 3.41 inches: 4350 47 to 50 grains 2280 to 2611 fps; 4831 49 to 51 grains 2205 to 2358 fps. Some of the loads I tried with the Lyman 287308 at an OAL of 3.457 used the following powders and amounts just for fun: Unique 11 and 12 grains; 2400 16 and 17 grains; 4759 22 and 24 grains; Red Dot 11 grains. I didn't record the results on target with any of these since before I got serious with anything my friend talked me into trying his 6.5x57R barrel on the rifle. From memory though, the Speer loads shot very well. (The 6.5x57R factory loads are real whip crackers, too.)

fella's  thanks for the info.  That gives me a safe starting point.  I'd like to whack a whitetail out to 300yds.  Gun is scoped so I am optimistic.  I scored a bunch of Berdan brass and with luck they will fit the brick of primers I have stashed away. I will most likely get a box or 3 of the S&B stuff.  I can not find 173 grn bullets so will have to use something available for reloads. back burner project, but deer season will be here before I know it.  thanks again
