removing firing pin lock pin on Rem RB #4 (Read 277 times)

	I have a Remington No. 4 Rolling Block that's in decent shape, but the firing pin is totally frozen in the projecting direction. I've tried everything I can think of to get it to move, but nothing. I think a previous owner may have pounded it too much and thickened it. So I decided to remove the pin that locks the firing pin in place. That moved a few thousandths, then stopped. I'm working on it from one end because the other end looks a bit peened from previous Bubbas. So my question is this - is that locking pin straight or tapered? Does it matter which end I drive it from to remove it from the block? This is the side I'm driving from

	Locking pin is strait. Takes a very stout punch to get it started to move then a punch that is slightly smaller than the pin to drive it out. I have seen a few peened on both side that make it difficult to move.

	Looking at your picture and I understand that this is the side you are driving it from but it looks like you have inadvertently staked it in place. Its possible that the retaining pin has become a rather permanent fixture of the block. It might be a better approach to load it in the milling machine and carefully shell it out.

	I'm here to report success in getting that pin (and the firing pin) out. I had tried it in my hydraulic press last night, but folded the drive pin because it wasn't perfectly perpendicular. Tonight I made a fixture with a pin pressed into it at a perfect 90 degrees and used that fixture flat against the hydraulic piston. The Remington block sat on another fixture. A couple easy pumps and a big SNAP! Out came the pin easily after that. The best part was yet to come. Even before taking out the firing pin, I could see that the reason the firing pin was frozen in place was because the previous MLB (Master Level Bubba) had put the (quite crudely hand-made) firing pin in and did not rotate it so the groove was aligned with the retaining pin. Nope - just drove the pin in right through the non-groove side of the firing pin. So yeah, that firing pin was never going to move. And no wonder the retaining pin was a bit peened, with the force it took to drive it in THROUGH the top of the firing pin. The firing pin came out easier than expected, in spite of how mangled it was. A couple taps with a brass hammer and it popped out. Numrich doesn't have the pin, but I can clean up the existing pin, and they DO have the firing pin as one of only 3 parts they carry for this rifle, so the gun is well on its way to being shootable again (32 RF so not much shooting). Thanks for the help & tips on this! FYI for others - if the retaining pin hadn't come out with the hydraulic press, the next step was to send it off to Jerry's Broken Drill & Tap Removal in Santa Ana, CA. I'm sure there are EDM/MDM places all over the country, but I've used Jerry's several times before, and they perform miracles.

	I have converted a few #4s to centerfire, probably threw out the old firing pins. If I find one on the bench you are welcome to it.

	Thanks John. I already ordered a new one from Numrich, but what you wrote makes me think of something that hadn't occurred to me before - convert it to centerfire. I just watched Larry Potterfield's video about doing it, and it looks pretty straightforward. If you know of any other instruction or information about doing a conversion, please let me know.
