Original Sharps chambers are often longer than you would think. The throat and taper can be generous. A 45/70 will almost take a 45/90 case sometimes.

My CSA Model 74 has a barrel stamp that says “40 cal 2 1/2. The only brass I’ve used since 2010 (rifle bought new then) is Hornady 405 Win. slightly trimmed to 2 1/2”.
