Picante Sauce "Grey" finish?

Over in the For Sale/Trade  forum under the subject:

"Withdrawn due to no interest. New C Sharps 1874"

there's a discussion about a picante sauce finish.  Rather than continue it there (sort of off-topic at this point) I thought I'd ask this here:

How durable is this picante sauce finish compared to French Grey?

I have a Low Wall with a French Grey receiver and the finish is getting thin.

The pic below is from that discussion and the followup poster said:

Degrease, spoon the sauce on and let it set for 20 minutes.
The  vegetable pieces make the mottled shapes and the vinegar causes the dark uneven staining.
Rinse and oil then reassemble

I like the looks of this and it's within my gunsmithing skill set.

I think if I were going to try it I would do a sample piece of scrap metal to verify the results. I think I will try it myself just to see if and how well it works.

You will find a lot of information on “vinegar etching knife blades”. Strength of the mix and time exposed are the variables. It can really bring out the grain in the steel. It’s a very common practice.

I tried medium Pace on a lowwall that had been polished by a previous owner. I blocked it with 320 to give the solution something to bite on. I left it on 20 minutes with some change, then tried the flip side for 30 minutes, washed it off then did the curved surfaces. Some color, but certainly not as much your Sharps. Its more silvery rather than darker and blue. I’m wondering if the difference of old metal to the new, modern alloy, or if it might be the difference between heat treating methods is the issue. Many variables for 2 chunks of metal. I’ll get more picante and try again and/or try the ketchup method.

Could it be the acid content maybe? Not a chemist so just a guess.

Yes, it is the acid content.  Vinegar is acetic acid (diluted in water of course)

The Sharps pictured was French Gray when he started, its also a C Sharps receiver if I remember right so the steel is modern and was hardened. Maybe already being done in the French Gray let it darken up like that. No Clue! I've got a C Sharps action that is still in the white that I was going to try this on and see what happens myself. If it doesn't look like I want then I'll clean it off.

The finish is as durable as any case color process.
The longer you leave the "sauce' on the parts , the darker the color.
Also, use "chunky salsa" for larger pattern.

The unasked question here- what/which specific picante sauce did you use? I'm trying to avoid a big investment for a trial run.
Thanks. CG

CG, the solution is obvious. Buy several brands, at least 4 bags of corn chips and a case of Corona.  It would also help to hire a mariachi band.
