This one is finally finished.  I've been working on it, in between large projects, as I have time for 3 years.  The action is an original that was engrave by Ken Burklow (linecutter) several years ago.  The outside of the engraving was done very similarly to originals, Ken said he got the pattern from Paul Shuttleworth, and ken designed the inside section.  5-6 years ago he decided to sell it and offered it to me.  Unfortunately Ken passed away a couple years ago.  I put on a new barrel, it is a 1-10 BRC and chambered it for 25-20ss.  The stock and forearm are by me, from blanks of American Black Walnut.  I had to make the buttplate because I could not find what I wanted.  I rust blued the barrel and an outside source did the case color hardening.

Beautiful work, Bob.  You did a masterful job of matching all the wood, textures and finishes together.

Nice Stevens thanks for posting.

Some background, Ken Burklow was a frequent competitor at my clubs single shot matches. Accomplished engraver with many fine guns engraved. I believe my rifle was the first CPA he engraved, design Ram one side Offhand shooter the other.

Few years later asked him about engraving my 2nd CPA original style Schuetzen with a high comb. By then Ken and Paul Shuttleworth had a very good working relationship. Paul suggested a standard Stevens design and loaned him an original engraved action as a pattern.

I noticed it was a bit different compared to engraving in reproduction catalogs. Ken explained many if not all high end rifles of the period were built to order. Engraving could be simpler or more ornate as the buyer desired. Ended up a little less than the pattern action, adding more latter. Ken said adding was also common in the period.

Finish the story had CPA build a 3rd rifle intending to use it at the Quigley. Very plain every respect. Ken wanted to shoot the match I couldn't go so loaned him the gun. He really liked it and a had a great time at the match. Ended up selling the gun to Ken.

Year latter Ken had it at a club match, transformed. Engraving, stock checkered and finished. Tastefully done real showpiece.

Ken and Paul were extremely talented, real gentleman too, miss them both.

Ken was suppose to engrave the 44 1/2 that I built from scratch.  We were working on a design when he passed away, so the project sat for quite awhile while I was finding an engraver.  Finally found Diane Scalese and she has that action engraved now.  I just need to finish the rifle.  At first I did want the same engraving that boats shows in reply 6, in the end I decided I wanted something different but with a somewhat same feel of that design.  Here's the 44 1/2.

Very nice, the small flourishes on trigger guard top of the action etc really make it stand out .They are the sort of things I added to my two guns.

It is amazing what a little scratching on metal has become. Wish I had the talent and patience to do it.

Ken use to make a joke very similar to this comment when someone would ask him about engraving.

If all it is, as you say, is scratches, just send me your stuff and I'll 'engrave' it and do a range test at the same time. Low rates and if you aren't pleased with my scratches just send it back and I will add more.
