I have a chance to buy a German falling block in 8.15 x 46 rimmed at a good price but I would like to convert it to 32/40. Can this be done or are there better choices?

8.15 x 46r is a excellent case and chamber. Just as accurate as the 32/40 either fixed or breach seated.

Cases are easy to make, too.

8.15x46r brass in readily available or easily made from 30-30 brass. This round is an excellent target round. I can’t imagine there is anything to be gained by chambering to 32-40. The value of the firearm will be reduced if it is rechambered.

Generally, 30-30 brass can be used to make 8.i5x46 cases, but I have run into differences in rim thickness and diameter. All can be dealt with, just more work. The hard to find RWS European brass was much better in that regard. I am not sure if there is a current importer for it. I am also not sure when the 8.15x46 was "normalized",but some early rifle chambers were all over the map.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I had lots of .32 Win. Spl. brass when I had an Aydt in the 8.15x46R and used it to form the cases. One shot into my die set to knock the shoulder off and trim to length. Easy-peasy. Wonderful cartridge, and should leave it as is.

By the way, Jonathan, is this a heavy Schuetzen or a light stalking rifle? 8.15x46R is great either way.

This is light hunting rifle that shoulders beautifully for me and is in good condition, no abuse, nice lines and with a really cool three leaf rear sight. I don't need it but it's nice and if I don't get it I'll regret it down the road. So here we go with a new cartridge, something that I hoped to avoid.

I think you can get better accuracy out of it as a 8.15 x 46R with fixed ammo, than the 32/40. Same accuracy beach seated.

Remember, that the groove diameter, most likely is going to be smaller than 32 cal. More often than not, the groove diameter will be ~.316.

Here's my 8.15x46R stalking rifle and a target I shot with it when I was playing around with finger seated stop ring bullets.
