Lining a barrel to .30 Herrett?

I used the .30 Herrett cartridge quite extensively back in the golden years of the Contender’s heyday.

It is quite an excellent round in its own right, and I have more than my fair share of brass stored here, along with seventeen different .30 caliber bullet molds (shameful, I know Cheesy)

I’ve long thought that it would make a great schuetzen chambering, and was wondering about lining the barrel on an existing single shot rifle. I have a few rifles to choose from, but thought I would ask if this might be pushing the limits of a barrel liner. I know folks will line barrels to .32-40 or .38-55, which both have the same case head size, but I’ve also been told in the past that trying to line a barrel to .30-30 or .25-35 is a no-no.

Since my thinking is not to be shooting fire and brimstone loads, I wonder if there is enough safety margin to accommodate the round? I believe the concern is trying to line Winchester 94 barrels, which are a bit petite at the breech?

My intention is to shoot cast bullets only, and keep them to moderate speeds appropriate for our sport.

What say you?

While I have lined a few barrels in 30-30 I don't recommend it. The 30-30 has 42,000 chamber pressure and the Herrett is said to have the same. I don't think it will blow up but the liner steel is not as tough as 4140 heat treated steel.
Liner diameter for 30 cal from T J's is 1/2". Might be able to talk Todd into making it 9/16" like the 32-40 liner if he has the right size metal.
First thing is to make sure the rifle will handle the pressure. The old H&R shotgun frame was also available in 30-30.

Certainly there can be no guarantee what might happen if such a rifle were to end up in the wrong hands, but my intention would never be to attempt anything remotely close to the Contender loads I’ve seen.

It would be more a matter of .32-40 equivalent schuetzen level, cast bullet loads, and even then just as a means to utilize the incredibly stupid amount of brass I have already formed, not to mention the compulsively collected number of .30 caliber molds I have to experiment with.

John, would you be so inclined to do the work on this? I’m thinking of using one of the reworked 8mm rolling blocks, I have several of those.
