Hepburn n 38-40 Remington

Cabellas has on their website a Hepburn in 38-40 Remington that they want $4600 for. It’s a schuetzen butt plate, single trigger and looks ok.
Now I know that something is worth what someone is willing to pay but that seem a bit more than over the top. Opinion?

When I have a question of value I check the auction sites like Rock Island and Morphey's to see what the rifles are actually selling for rather than what someone says their worth. You can easily see what Hepburns or Ballards have sold for over the last year. I watch the auctions closely and have gotten some good deals over the years. As far as Cabella's goes I don't think that their descriptions are adequate and that their prices are pretty much on the moon.

That particular rifle has been for sale for a year or so. It does appear to be in very nice shape. If the pictures were as good as some sellers can take it may not be very far off in price.

You need to include further info. Is it a B or an A grade, bore condition etc.

Why does a Hepburn rifle always look like a break open that is not shut all the way?

Hey, Vall, I found a Wesson-Hepburn. And here's what the Hepburn could have looked like. Which one would you have taken home to meet your parents? He he;-)

The Hepburn on the Cabelas site is actually a 38-50. The 38-40 is a shorter case.

See, Vall, even the Wesson didn't want to look like a Hepburn so I had to use rubber bands to keep it from auto opening;-)
Oh, that is an 1881 Westley Richards (Deeley and Edge).

Sorry Chauncey, but I still don't see any similarities between a Wesson and a Hepburn. Do those Wessons break open automatically when you fire them? Wink

A little odd, Hepburn sports a Winchester tang sight. Not sure it would index at the correct angle.
