Help with a shotgun.

While not a rifle or a single shot I could use a little help. A neighbor of mine brought me an old Belgium made Browning auto 5 shotgun with a broken recoil spring tube. The replacement tube is not threaded. Has anyone ever made this repair or know what the thread is in the receiver? As close as I can tell it appears to be 1/2 X48 thread.Hole measures about .480 dia. Don't have the old tube to go by. Anyone by chance know the thread?

Later tubes were hard silver brazed in place.

Yes I know but I don't have the capability to do that so I was going to thread the replacement but use a test piece first. If I can find the thread pitch. It's out there somewhere just got to find it.

Never had a need to try it, but I have seen recommendation to screw a dowel rod into a threaded hole then measure the pitch imprinted on the wood.

get one of these. they can be had pretty cheaply, then there will be no doubt.

I have all the tools but the thread is kind of faint and up inside the rear of the receiver so it is hard to get a gage up there to check it. I have a 7/16 x 28 tap so I might have to just retap it to that if I can't find the correct thread.

being it is made in Belgium, it is very likely that it is a metric thread since the metric system was adopted in the early 1800's there. also you mention threading to 7/16, but if your id is .480 it is already bigger than .4375 which is the major diameter for a 7/16th's thread. so based on your measurements it could possibly be a 13 x .6mm thread

I have used the wooden dowel trick a time or two. Another way is to plug the hole and pore a casting.

This is what I was thinking, if you can plug it. Use some Cerrosafe or similar low temp casting material, probably need to stick a screw or bolt in it while it’s hot so you can unscrew it.
