Extractor cutting

This is my set up to cut the extractor notch in a liner in a Ball & Williams Ballard. This set up is not for the faint of heart. It is not very rigid and light cuts must be taken or the job will be ruined. If I had a Bridgeport I would hang the barrel off the side of the table and swing the head to the side to make the cut. My Rockwell mill won't swing to the side so I have to do it this way.

For those of you not familiar with the Ball & Williams Ballard, here is a picture of the finished job. It was lined by Bob Hoyt and I chambered it in 44 S&W Special.

very nice job, definitely not for the faint of heart for sure. However, we just do what we can with what we have.

Nice job.  I’m afraid to make cuts like that on my lathe.

Instead of hanging the barrel off my mill table, I use a cutter that looks like a big, oversized key seat cutter.  The hardest part is indexing the end of the barrel for multiple passes if it won’t fit through the hole of either a spindexer or my rotary table.  If it does fit through the hole of the rotary table, the job is super easy.

Nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you do with what you have. Good job.

More than one way to Skin a Cat!  My old Boss, Mentor and Friend would say that!  I've been holding the Barrel with a Steady Rest and using a Foredoom Handpiece held in my Milling Attachment using 1/8" Carbide Burrs.
