What’s the best way to fit this extractor to the barrel doing it by hand?
Thanks
Chris

I fit all extractors by hand. I start by doing a visual and just get it roughed in close. Then I paint the extractor with a black felt pen and wiggle it in place to see marks were it's interfering. I then remove metal and mark it with the felt pen again, and try it again. Repeat until is slide in place and I can close the action and know it clears. Did a Ballard extractor yesterday and it took probably 15 tries to finally get it fitted and the breech block clearing. Once in awhile I get lucky and fit one in a half dozen tries.

x2 what marlinguy said, Then I put the extractor in my mill vise and put the appropriate chamber reamer in the chuck and cut the rim relief.

It already fits good, it’s the rim relief that needs done, I don’t have access to a mill or anything hence having to do it by hand. That’s the part I need to figure out.

Chris,

Install the extractor in the rifle & with a chamber reamer of the correct caliber & reamer wrench you should be able to cut the rim relief by hand without any problem.  If you don't have a chamber reamer, you can rent one with the wrench.

Thanks Wayne, hadn’t thought of that. That’s why I asked on here, I knew someone would have a good ideal!

Extractors are harder than barrels, and if you install the extractor on the gun and then cut it with a chamber reamer be sure to first get it pretty darn close first! Don't want the hardened extractor to push the reamer to the opposite side as it's run into the chamber.

I use a chamber reamer in the mill. Extractor in the machine vice. Correct diameter endmills work too.

I don’t have access to any of the machines you are mentioning so right now my plan is to mark it where it needs to be cut for the rim then under my microscope I use for engraving is use my graver to cut it where it needs to be for the rim recess then just clean it up and polish it from there. If you think I’m screwing up trying it this way then please let me know.

Might be tough on cutting tips for your graver. Better to mark it with the graver, then use a Dremel and a stone to shape it.

I figured I could cut the curved line for the edge of the rim then use a dremel and stones to finish it out. I’ve got plenty of graver tips to try will see how or even if it will cut first. Thanks for the input.
